I'm convinced the French affinity for delta wings is somehow influenced by the fact that over 80% of the populace has toxoplasmosis from the use of undercooked meat in French cuisine...I'm thinking the same is true of English airplane design, only with whatever parasite you can get from eating blood sausage and entrails.

Delta wings are the sexiest aeronautical shape. Just compare the boring old F-16 with the F-16XL.

From what I remember it was a perfectly good fighter but the F-15E required less modification and therefore was cheaper.

My brain parasites take offense to that. Blood and organs are good and good for you. Also, about 50% of the populations of Asia, South America, and Africa are infected with Toxoplasmosis, and I'm not seeing delta winged grognards flying from their pretty pretty swirly sparkly eyes ooh so fluffy who wants to hug a kitty.

That still makes zero sense considering they spend something like 80 million per unit for the Mitsubishi F-2 which already is pretty decently modified from the standard F-16s.

I think part of the F-2 price tag comes from the requirement that it be built/engineered in Japan, and they don't have a huge production volume to spread the costs out over. Something like that, anyway.

The thing I posted apparently was the first use of a ramjet and was supposed to reach Mach 2, but they got the area rule wrong somehow and never managed to get above Mach 1. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leduc_0.22 I can't get over how mental the thing looks. Second one is an earlier prototype. Can't stop laughing. Apparently humanity was a proper area ruling away from ending up with this instead of the Mirage III. e: the Nord 1500 Griffon is so funny. The cockpit and nose just sorta randomly sprout out the top. aphid_licker fucked around with this message at 22:42 on Oct 1, 2016 |

The French prototyped a swing-wing fighter bomber in the late 60s, powered by a SNECMA produced version of the TF30. The later two prototypes switched to the Atar turbojet. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sS90boHTAO0
