How is it distributed? Pictures can be batch imported (just multi-select everything).

It's the DLC I got on Steam. I guess I have to import the pictures to each folder manually.

Also are there any ship sprites in the default resources? I need one for the world map and for an exterior.

VV Oh okay! That's much easier.

Yeah, they should be under 'Vehicles' and are default set up in the database. Look under System and you'll find them. Double-click on one and it'll show you which spriteset it is named (should be Vehicles at any rate).

If you want to make a 'hero travels on boat' 'system' then just right-mouse click on the map where you want the ship to turn up and choose "Set As Starting Position", then click either boat, ship or airship. Later on, if you want it in another area - say you want to have it teleport outside of a new town and it was left on another continent, use the event command "Set Vehicle Location" (second page of event commands) and choose the map and co-ords you want it to show up.

Oh, and it does depend on the graphics for the copy/paste thing. There are certain packs where the background graphics aren't set up properly. In those cases, copy/paste them in the relevant folders, then open up the Import feature in Ace, find them in the folders and 'import' them. Click on the background colour as you do so and they should work fine. Only use this if you're getting squares of colour around resources, though.

Know what I love doing? Reading Steam Reviews of RPG Maker Games. Pretty much every negative one says "I could make this a better game in my sleep" with no explanation as to HOW.

Also, the whole changing vehicle graphic has always been a crapshoot for me. I could never get it changed, as the free resource places don't have the right dimensions for it.

That's a general thing humans do in general. They don't think of concrete ways product can be improved, but since it's bad, it can essentially be improved, resulting in broad strokes on how to improve it more often than not.

A similar idea is surrounded by the idea of hype. This upcoming game is going to be amazing. How is it going to be amazing? No one thinks about that, they just know it will be. It's admittedly really hard to avoid that thought process though.

A lot of hype involves specific features of a game.

With the constant use of cinematic trailers nowadays? Even then, features that are explicitly shown are often shown in the most ideal manner possible, often implying what they'll do is greater than what the product will actually give. Prime example of that is Watch Dogs and its revolutionary massive world to explore. It wasn't that massive. Basically, it's really easy to vaguely imagine the most ideal thing ever without actually knowing how it will turn out or how said pieces will work together.

And same with "I could make a better RPG than this." Yeah, the battle system wasn't really good, but how much thought do you think that person put into how you can improve it?

thetrueoskar
Jan 22, 2011
Back in my day, if you wanted to make a game, you had to make all the map and character images yourself, think of the entire battle system on your own (including formulas for damage and status effect accuracy), and if you had any kind of problem, you had to figure it out on your own or hope you knew someone who had an uncle at Nintendo and owed you a favour.

It was called RPGMaker: Pad of Graph Paper and Pencil edition. DLC was if you cut a picture out of a magazine and glued it to your character sheet.

...They would still probably be better than this game, though. Especially since it cost real money, although somehow it's STILL not as horrible (on a they-tried-selling-this? and a moral/ethical level) as Super Pokemon Bros.

Can't wrap my head around that tower, despite my best efforts. It's gotta come up later, right? They wouldn't just put an art asset on the world map leading to a new screen and everything without making SOME kind of reason for it existing. The time it took to do that could have been spent making anything else. Literally anything else, even just a proofread of the script, just something.

Even the most mediocre of game designers would try SOMETHING with them. Perhaps a puzzle that requires you to go to a certain floor in one to go to the other. Say, rooms that are sealed on one side, but there's a teleport or something that leads into those sealed rooms, if you solve a puzzle in the same floor on the other tower.

There's literally SO MUCH you could do with two towers aside from a simple FETCH QUEST.

And now you know why it frustrates me so. At this point in time I still was kinda hoping that they'd do something different but then nope, this place that had all the potential to do something different ends up just being literally 6 screens with no puzzles or combat or anything.

And here is some stuff that I would do differently. First of all I wouldn't have our heroes have to steal a uniform to sneak onto a ship to escape, I would instead have our heroes encounter a pirate that had his ship commandeered by Unitem because a rival pirate was roaming about so he couldn't reach a hidden port. So he's out to gently caress over his rival who stashes his treasure in the two ruined towers and can go between them and his ship by a teleportation stone that he purchased. So you break into the tower, steal all of the guys poo poo and sell it then teleport onto the rivals ship and fight the rival in a boss battle.

This accomplishes four things

1) The towers now have a purpose

2) You don't have to do the cliched "steal the uniforms, sneak onto a military ship" thing

3) You have a boss fight that makes sense from what has been set up.

4) You get a new character that would hopefully be amusingly dickish

Map layout. I'm not sure how big a dungeon should be, how to design hallways so they'll be effective and not just twisty, how do I space apart chests and so on.

That's not necessarily a bad thing. Ace has tent wall and roof tiles that you can use both in and out for tents. And there are some free-to-use resources around for larger pavillions, too.

Probably the single most important thing to keep in mind when you're starting out is that the player can see much less of the map than you can, so smaller and more compact is usually better. A common mistake is to do "village" maps where the houses have at least a full screen's worth of open field between them, which means the player has no idea where they are or where they can explore to.
