The jet has higher carbon footprint but at least it’s not a car.

Even in a full communism now utopian society, having a number of jet planes available for skilled pilots to use for leisure should not only be allowed, but encouraged. Carbon Footprint for a single jet that is used daily for leisure is still much much less then the carbon footprint of everyone having a personal car and commuting daily.

the high cost of free parking by donald shoup is a tremendously good read for people who actually like to read parking regulations, but honestly it's better to just summarize his points:

(1) remove off-street parking space minimums from zoning bylaws and let land developers decide how many they want to put in. why? because loving engineers have misled planners based upon precise but uncertain data like ITE Trip Generation (must accommodate 'peak' demand at all times, even if it exists as a mostly empty parking lot most of the time wow) instead of much more important factors, such as the price of parking or the surrounding context of the development site
(2) if you refuse to do that, then please god allow variances by incentivizing transit (parking requirement reduced if % of employees or residents guaranteed a free transit pass for the duration of their career / rental tenure usually by covenant)
(3) charge for on-street parking to keep traffic circulation going (including on-street parking permits for residents)
(4) spend on-street parking monies on local business / sidewalk / beautification improvements

to be fair, the car-dependent hog is a universal western phenomenon, here in Finland recently a bunch drove past parliament beeping their horns to protest "the government punishing motorists" with like gas taxes and ??? in the most limp-dicked demonstration imaginable

it's amazing how at least every other car owner wants to be able to drive absolutely everywhere so that it's cheap, fast and convinient and is incapable of understanding that it's physically impossible

Admittedly, the gas tax in Finland works out to about 80 cents a liter, while in the US it is 4.5 cents. Also, greater Helsinki's transit system is pretty good at least.

You can't really escape car culture, but I don't think it has busted anyone's brains as much as the US.

A silly little mouse!
Cars create actual spiritual and moral harm to society and push people towards reactionary political beliefs. The pervasiveness of cars is the sole enabler of Suburbia and Suburbia naturally creates an insular culture of selfishness by making it physically difficult to interact with other humans and form "communities" in the sociological sense. Everyone is literally separated from each other by massive property lots and all social spaces are removed from residential areas. There are no common shared areas and everyone is taught to treat his/her property as a fortress under siege that others must not be allowed to so much as walk through. The Suburbs are quite literally soul destroying. This was in fact a feature and not a bug, as Suburbia was encouraged specifically in order to trick a portion of the lower classes into thinking they were "self-reliant homesteaders" who mistakenly think they share class interests with the 1%.

correct post.

a whole lot of books have also been written on suburbia design, even the way garages are protruding menaces bulging out from the front with the front door recessed around it are intended to be uninviting and alienating

Listen, I've been around a bit, you know, and I thought I'd seen some creepy things go on in the movie business, but I really have to say this is the most disgusting thing that's ever happened to me.
I loved not having a car when we lived someplace that was possible, but I want to live in a cabin in the woods and it would be difficult to not have a car here given a roughly hour walk each direction to get milk, two hours for a doctor. I think there is a bus that covers that second hour, part of the day some days.

a collectively owned self driving EV fleet could probably reduce the number of vehicles out here by like 90% though. Everyone up here has 1 to n vehicles and most sit unused at any given time just like in cities, just with more rusty giant trucks and angry cut piped dirt bikes. Most giant trucks I see are moving people and empty beds in the majority of cases.

dont be silly, 5 seconds only gets you cussed out and a laid-on horn.

30 seconds though…your life is forfeit and no jury would ever convict, for you have delayed the holy driver.

of all the pie-in-the-sky posts itt (and there are a few that are truly laughably utopian - even for a diehard leftist), this one isn't that unreasonable. it basically hinges on self-driving advancing to the point of total autonomy which may seem to be a bit of a stretch right now, but not unreasonable i don't think. it doesn't even have to be totally composed of evs, good hybrids using synthetic fuel on a green energy grid are a viable alternative in this hypothetical too (though i'm including nuclear as being "green" here, maybe contentious). it could be run as a co-operative composed of driver/owners, which i've already seen in my country
