It didn't seem to hard a hit but reminiscent of Senna at Imola where he just went off the track. When they threw a safety during the WTCC race to get the helicopter transport off the ground, you knew it was bad.JingleBells posted:Yup, terrible way to go

The wheel is on it's last / second to last bounce as it hits his head. The kinetic energy transferred via his head was enough to punt ~20kg into the air and over a barrier. On top of that, hitting a barrier pretty much head on whilst unconscious isn't going to help your neck much. It's just really sad thinking how quickly things can go from normal to horrific.

I have often wondered why closed cockpits have never appeared. Not only would you get a much safer car buy aerodynamic benifits as well.

Not sure if this ever made it to youtube, but gonna ask around anyway. If I ever do find a copy I'll put it up for sure. Back in 1999 I had just bought my third Mustang; it was an old DPS car the guy that owned the shop I used to work at had owned for like six years. It was an unusually fast '89, considering the small list of mods, and is still chugging along to this day. I don't like paying the insurance anymore, so it's sitting under a cover in my carport for now. Might bring it back to legal status after I get a better job. I took it to Houston's local street racing spot, known as Rankin, a couple of times after I got it. Used to go there all the time in high school with my first Mustang, but I was up at Ft Hood now so wasn't in town all that much anymore. The main Goodnight strip was empty, so we went down an exit to Airtex where the racers would go when the cops shut down Goodnight. I ended up racing a fox body GT, probably a '91, that didn't seem to have too many mods. Basic engine stuff, sounded fast. I give him two car lengths and the move, maybe one I can't remember. We take off and I start to catch up in first when I completely miss second and fall back a bit. He hits second a bit too hard and totally loses control. Must have had bad tires because he swerved into my lane and then spun around and ended up running over a few small trees in the median. I would have been heavily damaged if I had hit second, since he crossed like five feet in front of me. We turned around and checked on him to make sure he was ok and we got out of there quickly, as did most everyone else it seemed. The next week that I went back (probably a month later) the parking lot was shut off, so nowhere for the hundred or so spectators to sit around, and the Airtex strip we used for racing was shut down permanently I believe after some guy racing a bike killed himself. So after all that, I get a call from the guy I bought the flamecar from and apparently someone posted a video of us racing on some website and he was upset that I almost wrecked his favorite car. This was back in '99, so no youtube as far as I know. I had the file for a while, but the hard drive it was on crashed a few years ago and I can't find any backups. Not sure if this would have ever made it to youtube, but it was a pretty good quality video considering when it was shot and the light conditions. The person filming got the race and the crash, then the camera goes over to the wrecked car and gets a good shot of the damage.

Jesus loving Christ, how much NASCAR can they have on Speed before they just rename it to 'The NASCAR Channel'? Speaking about NASCAR... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GkHycFocaOA So, GT5 will have NASCAR because it's popular https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JLbSu72pzB0 Okay, so they did manage to make it look kinda fun.

kimbo305 posted:Is the engine is that Fiesta the same as the WRC Focus's, just with more boost? Pretty sure the answer is no. It looks like it's based off a Euro rallycross chassis, so it should be bigger bore / stroke and a wildly bigger turbo. FYI, a WRC car often runs 60(!) psi boost. How the gently caress they do that with the restrictor in place, I have no idea. A restrictorless WRC car should be producing 500hp, with about 550 nm torque. With the restrictior, you get about 350hp with 700nm.

Bigger bore and stroke, or only one? Both engines have the same displacement. It seems crazy that so many racing classes have a 2.0L cap on engines.

I know a lot of the rules of airflow go out the window when boost is brought in to the equation but that still seems odd. Obviously you're the rally driver, I'm the guy who's never owned a turbo and is running off little bits remembered from reading Maximum Boost years ago, so I'll take your word for it, just curious about something that seems a bit backwards.

The rough rule of thumb is that you lose 30-40% hp but gain 15-20% torque. The restrictor haircuts the powercurve after about 5500rpm - but what it does do is increase air velocity into the turbo so that the turbo is working more effectively. And so you get a torque boost so the car is a torque monster at about 4000 rpm, but there is no point in revving past 6000rpm. I tend to change gear at 5700 It does seem odd at first, but it works.
