I've always heard Elan's song in my head as being similar to the end of "Transmission" by Joy Division where it goes "Dance, dance, dance, dance, to the radio"

There are builds where you can both sneak attack at range AND sneak attack undead; the idea being you're striking at their meridians that carry negative energy that provides locomotion; like acupuncture.

In this case however. Elan's just saying the range does not matter cause she can't get a sneak attack anyway.

Not being allowed sneak attack Undead was always super dumb to me. Like I viewed it as one of the worst parts of D&D, and more of a problem then anything alignment related.

Like the idea was Undead don't have functioning anatomy or weak points for you to exploit.
So you can't shoot a zombie in the head or stab a vampire in the Heart.

I mean, it's even worse. You can also not sneak attack constructs, plants and oozes. Neither can you sneak attack creatures that have concealment, or creatures that are immune to critical hits. At reasonably high levels, you don't have to try to find any of those.

I once played a rogue in a one-shot where the DM had built every encounter with creatures that had one or more of these traits, entirely by accident. I was highly displeased.

Of all the things you can't sneak attack, oozes make the most sense. They don't have organs or even a particularly important part.

Concealment makes sense as well but concealment is just too broad and too easy to have. Like if you see someone in silhouette they have concealment, which is bullshit. You see they shape.

Like if someone is hiding behind a curtain, that's real concealment. Sure make it impossible to sneak attack that, you don't know what you're stabbing.

There should be more monster weaknesses giving them vulnerability to sneak attack and critical hits. It's really odd that you can't sneak attack a golem for example; when the original myth of the golem had it animated by a piece of paper put in its mouth -- remove or deface the paper and it turns back to inert matter.

The best part of this is that it means an assassin can't sneak attack someone to death while they sleep in a darkened room. They have concealment from the darkness.

(Sure they can coup de grace or whatever but still.)

Well, in that case it kind of makes sense. Coup de gras kills them outright, sneak attack might not as it just does damage. The concealment thing is still dumb, but sometimes it's dumb enough to wrap around and make sense.

According to the SRD for 5e, it works a bit differently.

quote:

Sneak Attack

Beginning at 1st level, you know how to strike subtly and exploit a foe's distraction. Once per turn, you can deal an extra 1d6 damage to one creature you hit with an attack if you have advantage on the attack roll. The attack must use a finesse or a ranged weapon. You don't need advantage on the attack roll if another enemy of the target is within 5 feet of it, that enemy isn't incapacitated, and you don't have disadvantage on the attack roll. The amount of the extra damage increases as you gain levels in this class, as shown in the Sneak Attack column of the Rogue table.

So yeah, it looks like you can sneak attack the darkness now.

Yeah anything can be sneak attacked at at any range. You just need advantage on the roll (Something you can get from attacking from stealth.) or an ally within 5 ft of the enemy.

That's what I meant, in that you get a weapon and build your entire class around it and it's basically the same as a level appropriate random drop

Hell, you can play a Kensai and get a magic weapon and actual class features!

Edit: I mean, they're kinda lovely class features because somebody at WotC decided that the best thing a weapon-focused PrC needs is a 3/4 BAB, but still better than Ancestral.
