I feel embarrassed that I once had the impression that Fareed Zakaria had opinions to take seriously.

mengele only did psycho poo poo instead of real research. the US probably got data from the japanese war criminal scientists but it was probably just for WMDs instead of medical research lol

I wouldn't be surprised if we did learn something from their vivisections.

731 was garbage but the Nazis actually did make pretty significant accomplishments regarding public health, within the insanely specific parameters of the subgroup they regarded as the public, racially desirable Germans . despite that some of them were easily extrapolated onto general populations and were just good practice. there are a few examples but what springs to mind is ovarian and breast cancer detection and treatment, characterized by a huge push for free mammograms (often performed in factories and stuff by traveling doctors) and quick treatment. also the whole anti smoking crusade. we didn't get anything from mengeles gruesome experiments but Nazi science, even underpinned by wrongheaded racial assumptions, laid the foundation for a lot of important stuff in the world of cancer my source is a great book called The Nazi War On Cancer which devotes a whole chapter to the question of using and interpreting Nazi data acquired through unethical means. interestingly many doctors chose not to use it at all even if it was relevant because they felt the data was sort of cosmologically tainted

Plutonis posted:What would be possible that using recent corpses and animals couldn't? IIRC they acquired some meaningful data about blood loss and battlefield medicine, typically by shooting or wounding prisoners repeatedly and "treating" the wound, which wasn't exactly vivisection but did require live prisoners ofc the vast majority of the quackery conducted by both the Nazi and Japanese regimes were useless abattoir style murder sprees but there are interesting questions surrounding the use of data that has already been gathered in a hosed up way

I choose to believe this person just thinks the left should shrug and vote like the evangelicals on the right did, solely for a Supreme Court seat, because turnabout is fair play.
