What's the difference between a promobox and a lockbox?

Asimo
Sep 23, 2007

Promo ships are 1) actually limited time, 2) come from DOFF or R&D packs which generally have nothing else really worth the effort of opening in them, and 3) have similar drop rates despite the packs being more expensive, and 4) are generally a lot flashier/stronger/more desirable than even lockbox boats to try and con people into opening their wallets. It's pure gambling exploitation without even the pretense of consolation prizes like a normal lockbox.

Oh like when that JJ frigate came as part of some R&D packs. F that.

Ironically, now that I’ve taken over the LP from Moon Slayer lockbox ships are way less attractive. Almost all of them make zero narrative sense, and they’re annoying if you run into other players flying them in group content.

There's no telling whether it is a copy/paste error or not because who the gently caress knows with STO but the mishmash of stats and abilities on the Jellyfish are horrible.

Don't worry, all the recent promo boxes have been flashy canon ships instead of weird alien ones. Because God knows we can't just put hero ships in the store when we can wring thousands out of the whales.

If they hadn't been available at launch when the game was sub-only, I bet the Defiant, Galaxy and Voyager class ships would be lockbox ships now.

Vadwaar
Nakhul
Tzenkethi

I wouldn't be shocked to see new promo-only versions of those at some point too. Pilot Defiant, Flight deck cruiser galaxy, science dreadnought warship voyager, whatever, spend $500+ on gamble boxes and maybe get one, suckers.

It's honestly rather disgusting. I bitched about the lock boxes when they were added and that hasn't changed, but they're at least more... fair? They even have some bad luck protection even if nothing tells you this. If you're purely F2P you can just buy most of the goodies and even a ship off the exchange once or twice per year without needing to exploit the economy. Good loving luck with a promo ship though, they invariably cap out the max price because the odds are so poo poo. It's just predatory and there's no excuse for it besides :capitalism:

This may have gone away, I rolled over the old threshold by a hundred without it kicking in? Also the secondary lockbox prizes have really been diluted over the years. Most of it is crummy doff packs and boosts and the lobi store doesn't get much either. You get a costume with every box, but ships are few and far between. Y'all laughing about there being more promo ships than lockbox lately, but lobi ships are also becoming a relic of the past. The last lobi ship that wasn't a T5 update was like over a year ago now.

Asimo
Sep 23, 2007

Yeah, I wouldn't put it past Cryptic to have taken that out at some point, especially since it wasn't publicized. Gotta eke out as much cash as possible from the whales, I guess? And to be honest I didn't even really think about how infrequent lockboxes had become, even if I did notice how abandoned the lobi shop was. Anything that doesn't give huge immediate cash influx just isn't worth bothering with I guess. :geno:

I don't want to get all reddit-whiny, but christ it's really blatant how little they give a gently caress about non-gambling players. Even the c-store has been relatively dry lately too, especially considering most of the recent disco promo boats would be the sort of thing they'd release on the shop once a month or so in the old days, probably with some big nine-pack of hero ships or something. But they can't even do that, I guess? I wonder how long it'll be until they get away with quietly retiring the c-store and just making everything a promo-style box reward instead, or just making a functionally new tier of ships and only giving them as promo drops. It sounds unlikely, but the fact we've had two free T6 c-store boat events so far this year shows that they're probably considering it a secondary revenue stream at best.

Buy keys, open boxes, get lobi. It isn’t a great conversion rate but it’s built into the game.

Phoenix boxes are just a permanent thing now it seems. They might be panicking about the exchange, but it probably also means no new stuff being added to it, all hail the mudd market and 60$ consoles. :munch:

If I knew how to make enough EC to buy keys regularly, I'd use it for a ship. Endeavours and selling R+D mats only goes so far. I'd love to hear a better way though.

Flip items on the exchange. Find a commodity and learn what the high / low cycles are. I’d estimate I clear about 5m a day like that for about 30 seconds of buying and listing and that’s pretty modest.

Its official apparently. The boxes will just stay in the dil shop, while the weekend events with the free box per day won't appear again.

ahahahahahah no
dilex is forever hosed

instead of occasionally seeing the dill exchange bumped down lower cryptic thinks the whales will never run out of dollars

god, I wish I'd dumped my dil when this thread said so a little while back. I had so little to dump, and this game is like 20gb I couldn't afford to download, so I didn't. Guess I just just dump every dill the moment I can afford a single zen from here on out. No use waiting for a Phoenix weekend.

Oh, and no more free Phoenix boxes because gently caress YOU that's why.

Asimo
Sep 23, 2007

Yeah, it'll basically be permanently at 500 the second there's another promo or something else to push it up again since there's absolutely no downward pressure now. I have no loving idea what Cryptic is thinking at this point, but they obviously don't give a gently caress about common players ever buying realistic amounts of zen again.

The only real upside is that this completely neutered the overcomplicated upgrade system and finally makes it a little more worth upgrading up more than 3-4 times per year. But that clearly isn't what they were trying to do here, so...

Assuming pets count as vanity items, agreed. Also, if they're going to keep dumping R&D mats on you for doing anything in game, they really need to increase the R&D inventory space.

Just trash it all, its worthless. There's only a bare handful of things worth crafting and they all require either specific doffs or dil cost components to make, the mats have been devalued to the point they're completely pointless now
