Quick tutorial on getting a virtual camera input on your Mac, I wanted to get this down before the iOS NDI HX Camera app isn't free anymore (June 1st)

So even 2 months ago, getting a virtual camera and audio input on your Mac from an external source (like your iPhone's camera) was impossible or a huge pain in the rear end. Since then, a few things have happened:

NewTek released new macOS NDI Tools that finally include an NDI Virtual Input utility for the Mac, and it works great! Get that here:

http://new.tk/NDITOOLSAPPLE

Zoom also had virtual inputs blocked for a while, but in the latest update (5.0.4) finally re-enabled it:

https://support.zoom.us/hc/en-us/articles/201361963

quote:

Support for virtual cameras will be re-enabled for users on client version 5.0.4.

So finally, you can now have an NDI video/audio source as a virtual video/audio input on your Mac, for use with Zoom and whatever else.

The free thing that will cost $20 after May is the NDI HX Camera app for iOS, which turns your iPhone into a very nice, low latency webcam:

https://apps.apple.com/us/app/ndi-hx-camera/id1477266080

There used to be an official Android NDI HX camera app too that got pulled for some reason. I haven't tried it, but it can be sideloaded... don't blame me if your Note explodes.

I recently got my first Mac and have some questions about MSOffice.

I have Office365 through work and I use it extensively. It appears that the AutoSave feature isn't working right on the Mac and I don't know what's up. On Windows I open a file from my OneDrive, and autosave is already on and whatever work I do automatically updates the file, and it gets reuploaded like it should. On Mac, however, every Office file I open, whether it be word, excel, powerpoint, whatever, the auto sync feature is always turned off when I open it. I have to click to enable autosave, then it has to overwrite the file that is already there. I have to give permission for it every time.

Does anyone else have this behavior? Any idea how to fix it?

Is it a setting in Preferences maybe?

FWIW I was never able to get this working - either in Quicktime video recording or in the updated Zoom. There's a knowledge base article saying if you're using an iPhone X to disable the microphone in app but that doesn't seem to fix anything for me.

Is there some better way?

Doesn't it clean it up by itself? I have a Synology that I'd allocated about 3TB of space for TM backups and Time Machine seems to police itself fine purging older copies when it needs more space.

There’s also a question of whether they’re running “rm-rf” from the Mac on a share mounted over the network versus SSHed into the server and running it as a local command.

Any big cleanups I do on my NAS are always done SSHed into the NAS. I don’t know the intricacies or how “rm” works but anecdotally, it has always been slower over the network versus on the local box so I’m guessing it does some iteration of inodes in batches? Alternatively, the implementations make different assumptions in Mac vs Linux (I have a QNAP)?

It's always better to do it on the machine itself, whether logged into the web interface or by remote terminal login. Otherwise everything has to round trip from the Drobo to the Mac and back again.

Not what I meant. I have a Synology, so when I had to kill my old TM backups I logged into the NAS on its web interface and ran the delete command on an app running on the box itself. That's what I mean. Otherwise the Mac is the intermediary and is slowing the process down.

I use the default that it suggests, I believe that’s Home/someaccountinfo - OneDrive and Sharepoint syncs do a similar thing. Does your OneDrive folder have a cloud icon? Can you right-click a file in your OneDrive in Finder and see specific options like share (with the blue cloud), view online, and keep on this device or whatever?

I’ve had to reinstall OneDrive for a few different issues before, it’s not that painful, really. It gracefully recognizes and matches downloaded files so you don’t have to pull gigs of data down again or deal with duplicates.

I have all those options when I right-click. Everything is synced no problem, and it works fine. It's just that when I open a file the AutoSave function in the top left (in Word for example) is turned off, and I have to manually turn it on. Then it wants me to choose where to save, and it usually chooses the last folder I saved ANY file in, not where the current file is. When I do navigate to the right area and save it, it will autosave as long as the file is open. But if I close it and reopen it I have to turn everything back on manually and overwrite the current file.

I just reinstalled OneDrive, and the behavior is the same. I don't know what's up.

I mean you can try this AT YOUR OWN RISK (I'm assuming HFS or APFS format). I found this from 2006, so YMMV if it even works.

quote:

open the Terminal application in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder, and enter the following:

chmod 555

followed by a space. Drag the disk's icon from the Finder into the Terminal window, and then append .Trash to the path. Press Enter; if this has been done properly and the disk's format supports it, the Finder will prompt you to delete files immediately when they are moved to the Trash.

so it would probably look like:

code:
chmode 555 /Volumes/SomeDroboDrive/.Trash

any chance you’ve tested this out? NDI usually has a 500ms delay, which is unusable with the music stuff I do. I’m guessing it’ll be a shorter delay cuz it’s just being passed from one program to another and not one computer to another, but I wanna make sure
