Did you hit the speed control? Even on a crap turntable I wouldn't expect a "chipmunk" effect from speed deviations resulting from bad manufacturing and/or normal wear-and-tear, you'd have to seriously be running at the wrong speed for that to happen.

Ok that doesn't sound right at all. Are you sure the belt is installed correctly? Like maybe it is around the wrong part of the motor shaft.

That's what I thought, but I took it apart again and reseated the belt and it still sounds the same.

Alright so the motor spindle looks like this:

code:

] [

I seat the belt into the conveniently belt-width groove at the top, right? I followed the guide here:

Does switching speeds to 45 speed it up even further?

Yup.

Honestly it's pretty weird that a newer turntable would have belt issues to begin with, so maybe something else is a factor here.

I didn't say how long I've had it, but it's almost three years old now.

Yeah, and David Gilmour might as well be Alvin on the 33 rpm setting. It's not fluctuating. The speed is constant, just way too fast.

I recorded a video:

For reference: the slowdown was subtle. I put on Pink Floyd's Meddle on Christmas Eve and didn't notice it during the first instrumental track, but as soon as the singing started a few minutes in it jumped out at me. My girlfriend didn't notice it at all. I never touched it until today, opting to wait for the new belt to get in before I bothered using it again. The new belt was slightly, but noticeably smaller in diameter than the old one.

The high speed is far from subtle, as you can probably hear.

All-in it cost about 1/2 the price of the whole unit :negative:

That sounds right, but usually there is an easier way than stretching the belt over the spindle with your fingers. There is probably a post on the platter that you can stretch the belt over, then just line it up with the motor and turn it a few times. using that method might remove any chance for improper seating. See this vid for an example:

https://youtu.be/YLwyop5CTxY

Even if you got a belt that was too tight or loose, neither would make the speed too fast.

I'll try this method but I'm not hopeful. Seems more like I got a busted motor or speed control switch I'm guessing?

listened to the Glagolithic Mass again and it's still one of my favorite works of the century

also i like that DG labeled what language their releases were in, and this one was labeled as "Altkirchenslawisch", which I found out was Old Church Slavonic. I wonder if there's anything else in their catalog in Old Church Slavonic that isn't the Glagolithic Mass.

Beautiful condition.

Also dredged the Salvation Army for some more diamonds in the mud.

Rio Trio is apparently Scandinavian?

And there appears to have been a collection that got water damaged, I've found several with the same recent damage. But at 3 for a dollar, I went for it and then after I got it home and looked at the centerfold too. Oh boy.

And a few other odds and ends

I’ve picked up a bunch of stuff from this label because the covers are kind of compelling in a way, but I’ve never found anything super interesting. But I would continue to grab that stuff if I wasn’t trying to fix some bad habits because I like the B&W/bootleg/private press vibe.

MHS stuff is about the least valuable stuff in any record store but a lot of it is good to listen to. I think a bulk of it was licensed from Erato in France, mostly niches like French classical music and early/Renaissance stuff.

Thank god there is one cover this time so it's simply down to what colour you'd like. Also I like that she's (he's? they're?) developing a print of the cover photo for Previous :)

Here's where to go and for what in detail.

If you want black, go anywhere! Including the places linked below.

Indie retailers, Matador's site, and Belles' Bandcamp gets the orange. Very nice. My choice. Bandcamp has the benefit of downloads plus streaming via Bandcamp app.

Rough Trade has clear, going fast, not my cup of tea but it's here

Monorail exclusive, Blue, and it was gone before I woke up :sigh: Thank goodness it's not signed or with any kind of art print, that would have hurt way more than missing a colourway.

CD. Available all over including everywhere above. Would advise waiting for the Japanese CD to pop up on Amazon Japan if you want it, as it may have bonus tracks. If it does, I'll be getting one; PM me ASAP if you want one and I can do a group buy.

I sound like a broken record but again, so relieved to not have multiple covers that my broken compulsive brain would insist I collect.

Oh! And the first single is out. I'll wait to hear the album in full but YOU don't

someone on discogs sold me the Bernard Haitink/Concertgebouw Philips recording of Mahler's Symphony No. 2 and instead I got the Bernard Haitink/Concertgebouw Philips recording of Mahler's Sympony No. 8. Fool!

e) in all seriousness I do want to get all the Haitink/Concertgebouw Philips Mahler recordings. back in the day not everyone actually recorded Mahler so it was basically Haitink, Kubelik on Deutsche Grammophon, and Leonard Bernstein on Columbia, it was a legitimately important set of classical records. now there are like 500 Mahler cycles because everyone records everything

realized last night I'm probably going to run out of room for records a lot sooner than i thought i would. dunno how to feel about it, don't really want to start to thinning out the collection, but maybe should grit my teeth and get into it

the problem is that there's some stuff i don't listen to all that often that i absolutely don't want to lose if just because it gives the collection more flavor than just My Usual poo poo and it still feels like i should be cutting that stuff because it just gets less time on the turntable than everything else, or i mostly own it because it's funny that it exists

idk. collecting is some weird poo poo

Yeah I've been in this exact predicament for a while now. The problem with being purposeful about what you buy is that you actually want it long term so when you run out of room... you really run out of room.
