How do you "catch" them? Are they thrown at you?

Do you use the creatures to upgrade your stats? Can you sell them?

Sorry, you use what seems to be a magical tennis ball to disintegrate and break these creatures to your will. The first creature is given to you by a shirtless man. Did I mention these creatures seem to have elemental affinities? The creatures are how you interact with the world. All upgrades to the player character are cosmetic.
