North Star is primarily the people that were in DSA before the Bernie 2016 campaign. While it is true that the DSA bylaws do allow for the expulsion of DSA members that are dual carding in a self-described democratic centralist organization, DSA as a whole has decided that for now allowing SAlt to openly dual-card is a good thing and the National Political Committee is not seeking to expel SAlt members for openly dual-carding as the open-natured bit of it has been seen as just providing a different political viewpoint without it being an attempt to recruit to their org through splitting off members. North Star doesn't agree but since they don't have any members whatsoever on the NPC, their ability to advocate their opinion is limited. Because SAlt sided with the majority DSA opinion on international issues such as "while Russia invading Ukraine is bad, the US and NATO really pushed to make it essentially inevitable" or "China's belts and roads initiative is good", North Star now believes that SAlt and other far left groups have taken over DSA and they now want to start kicking out members for the purity of their vision of DSA, which is unlikely to happen as they hold 0 out of 16 seats on national leadership.

croup coughfield posted:does dsa even do anything anymore? i havent heard anbything about them in awhile My chapter couldn't elect a second co-chair because we had a clause that one of the co-chairs had to be woman or POC. The sole co-chair then got a job as a union organizer who travels all over the country. We had several meetings we couldn't make a quorum, and I don't think I've heard from them in months.

croup coughfield posted:gently caress yeah, man. this is great to hear! Sure, here's a Jacobin piece on it : https://jacobin.com/2023/03/denver-anti-wage-theft-laws-state-local-politics/ the good stuff posted:The new bill gives aggrieved workers two paths to reclaim stolen wages. The first is through the Denver Labor office, which will investigate the claim and has the ability to charge employers wages owed plus 12 percent interest. The second option is the right of private action, which enables workers to sue in court for treble damages, attorney’s fees, reinstatement of employment, and $100 for every day they went with wages unpaid. My understanding is the "up the chain" piece is a real game changer, since sub-contractors love to go "oops we went out of business, sorry!" and leave workers high and dry. If you want to really get in the weeds, the official language is here (I think) : https://www.denvergov.org/files/assets/public/auditor/documents/denver-labor/2023/civil-wage-theft-rules.pdf
