Traditional Scandinavian autumn/winter food is basically made for bulking, anyway.

But also, can we agree that people who throw down weights for no reason need to be escorted out of the loving gym?

Just had this at my gym. Dude was lifting 275, which is great and all, but seriously there is no reason to drop that weight. I'm pretty sure the rule is that you have to silent unless you're lifting 4 plates

Not like, just releasing you grip from up the up position on a deadlift, no. Using your arms to toss the weight away from you. Which, if you can do that, you weren't lifting heavy enough anyway.

the unfit are traitors to their own species

From a modern perspective, it’s easy to think of exercise as a boring chore that most would rather avoid. However, exercise has played a critical role in human history for thousands upon thousands years, if not many more. Case in point: recent evolutionary anthropological and biological theory suggests that long distance running may have been one of the most important components in early hominid physiological evolution (Liebenberg, 2006). Through “persistence hunting,” humans and their evolutionary predecessors literally chased their prey until it died of exhaustion. This in turn gave significant reproductive benefits to individuals with physiologies most suited to continuous physical exertion, and created the extremely effective and uniquely human cooling system colloquially known as “sweating” (Liebenberg, 2006). Exercise also precipitates and increases the release of numerous neurotransmitters that improve focus, visual acuity, and intensify sexual attraction (McGovern, 2005). It is not difficult to imagine the survival benefits this would provide for prehistoric humans. Exercise is part of our DNA.

Beyond its evolutionary and survival importance, exercise is a recurring part of many cultures from all over of the globe. As migratory hunter gatherer societies gave way to animal husbandry, farming, and long term urban settlement, physical activity took on new forms. Instead of persistence hunting, individuals toiled in the fields or gathered the raw resources necessary for urban development. Exercise also became an important form of cultural expression, through events and practices such the Greek olympics, the Aztec ball game Ulama, the massive variety of martial arts found throughout the world, European jousting, all the way to the rise of the multibillion dollar modern athletics industry.

If the previous section seems a bit off topic, it is only to contrast modern society’s relationship with exercise against that of its own lengthy heritage. Use of increasingly complex technology has lessened or completely removed the need for physical activity for daily survival, and the surge in global obesity rates makes it very clear that no good replacement has been found. It also worth noting that we have substituted the rush of exercise with the rush of unhealthy food and vicarious activity, even when doing so is demonstrably toxic to long term health. However, this is an extremely recent development. Anatomically modern homo sapiens first emerged as much as 195,000 years ago, and have definitely existed for over 110,000 years (O’Neil, 2013). The massive surge in technological development and the behavioral changes it brought only occurred in the last 150. All of this leads to an obvious conclusion: Human beings are not built for lethargy. Exercise isn’t an activity for the vain. It is a deeply ingrained and crucial part of our mental and physical function since long before we became “human.” Thus, we are living far longer than ever before, while also dropping one of the most essential activities in allowing us to get there.

That's stupid, gains are inherently anti evolution as evidenced by your body's desperate desire to shed the energy greedy muscles the instant you stop exercising it.

Semantics, we're all discussing routines to trick the body into developing more strength and mass than it needs to function. What our ancestors did wasn't exercise, it was survival.

That's fine, he's doing heavy poo poo and the weights go right down.

I'm talking about like, if he straightened back up, then tossed it out in front, away from him and towards other people. That's the poo poo I'm seeing

That reminds me of the old saw about being childless and proud.... literally over a billion years of life on the planet, every single one of your ancestors... the awesome ones and the dorks, right back to the primitive prokaryotes, managed to reproduce at least once.... and then you came along.

Hey you know that rack where the bar slides up and down the rails, and there are hooks so you can just twist the bar and latch it on to the rack?

I've seen people squatting in that thing, benching, incline benching, decline benching with the sit-up bench, and yeah, even curling.... but today I saw two guys taking turns.... lying on the floor on their backs, feet pushing up on the bar, doing leg presses. That was a new one. Is that an awesome idea, or stupid as hell? I mean, there's a squat sled right over there, and a legit squat rack a few feet away from that, and leg extension and curl machines.
