Goff knows what's up. Bernstein is already out defending the Bulls tonight. Same with Kaplan. The media narrative is "the Bulls picked a lane and should be applauded" as if that's not something a GM should always be doing.

This sums it up.

Ignoring they traded him to my local team, I don't mind Chicago trading Butler. They were in a terrible position to rebuild around a 27 year old. I don't think they should be crucified for that decision.

They should be for what they got back. I cannot believe they couldn't work something out with Boston or find a 3rd partner with Cleveland or something. LaVine is a better piece than I think a lot of people are realizing, and the Lauri seems like, uhh, a pick alright. But yeah, that was 60 cents for a dollar.

Who have a loving better GM and Organization than the Bulls.

Look, I am almost sympathetic to the argument that the Bulls "needed" to hit the reset button. But when you accept that conclusion, you have to look at how they got to this point.

1) Jimmy Butler is 27 years old, is a top-15 player in the league and has only gotten better over the past few years
2) He has two years left on his contract, which is a good value, and wanted to come back

Has a player EVER been traded in that context? If you can't build a good team with a guy like that in your pocket already, you are not qualified to run an NBA team. Things only got this dire because of the incompetence of the front office, and you can't let them get out of it by saying "ah, nothing we can really do now, gotta start all over again."

If a new GM came in and determined the cupboard was too bare to build around Butler, I'd accept that. If GarPax are doing that, why are we assuming anything other than that they're too lazy to do the work to build a real team unless it falls in their laps?

Honestly, I'm not that upset with them trading Butler and getting what they can. Like you said, he's 27 and this team is so far away from competing it's not funny. Worst place to be is mediocre. And I almost could have talked myself into the trade with the Wolves if they didn't give up the 16th pick too. And selling the 38th pick (which has value) is pathetic. I'd have been fine if they moved it for a future pick.

I like Lavine but my gripe with him is he'll be a RFA next offseason. So if he comes back from knee surgery and plays well, the Bulls are going to have to pony up a lot of money to him. It's not unfathomable that he could command a max contract.

And I guess I'm also mad that they aren't turning Rondo's NG deal into an asset. Plenty of teams looking to dump salaries. Why didn't they get in on that Russell deal? I'm sure the Lakers would rather have cap space and the 16th pick over what the Nets gave up. They'll do a rebuild but they won't do it like Philly or Boston trying to acquire assets. They'll half-rear end it because they are lazy.

classic Ernie Grunfeld move. Sign a bunch of bad contracts and then claim that you were getting value for them when you got them off your books/moved to rebuild. It completely distracts from the part where the only reason you are in such a poo poo situation is because of your own poor decision making.

It's actually old school GMing

It's just so frustrating to see a guy like Morey, for all the warts you might wanna ascribe to him, work his rear end off to turn a ~treadmill team~ into one with a bonafide star and many complimentary role players. And here are the Bulls, at the dawn of their rebuild, throwing a first-mid rounder into a trade where they give up by far the best player, and then selling their second pick.

There is no initiative, no sense of urgency to root out good assets or look for a competitive advantage. The Bulls are gonna be fine with the return on this trade for a few years, make their picks and just hope it all works out.
