Directed by: Quentin Tarantino
Starring: Samual L. Jackson, John Travolta

Pulp Fiction was probably the best movie to come out in 1994, and is one of the best movies to be released since then.

The plot is complex in that it has more than one story intertwined with others (i.e. Jules and Vincent and the Marvin part that ends with the beginning of the Ringo scene). The dialogue is what keeps this movie going. If you aren't interested in dialogue in a movie, this may not be your movie of choice. The dialogue shows the human side of Vincent and Jules. Both are hitmen, and hitmen are usually portrayed as some gung-ho types, but these guys talk about stupid things like what they put on fries in Amsterdam.

John Travolta's role in this movie practically resurrected his career. His three movies prior to this were Look Who's Talking Now (1993), Shout (1991), and Eyes of an Angel (1991). The only one out of those three that I saw, or even heard of, was Look Who's Talking Now, and it was poorly acted. So in a sense, this did resurrect his career.

Despite Travolta's strong performance, I think Samual L. Jackson's character "Jules" stole the show. With his Ezekiel 25:17 speech that he gives, it just adds to his "bad motherfucker" image. His "bad motherfucker" image will make more sense if you've seen the movie.

The coolest character by far: Winston Wolfe. The Bonnie Situation (the scene he was in) was the best scene in the movie, and he played the coolest character in the movie. Simply put, Harvey Keitel was amazing in his small but powerful role.

The screenplay of this movie was some of the most original I've seen in a film. Which is probably why it won Best Screenplay at the 1995 Oscars, one of the few awards me and the Acadamy can agree on. To give you an idea of how original the screenplay is, Vincent dies in the middle of the movie, but is still in it at the end, where the movie ends right where it began.

RATING: 5

PROS: Excellent dialogue and screenplay
CONS: A little long

This film has really good acting but I still find this movie massively overrated. I don't really dig the story at all.

I don't understand why so many people like this movie so much. A couple friends of mine are Quentin Tarantino fanboys and rave about how funny this movie is, but I thought it was just dry and boring.

One of my absolute favorite movies. One of the only things I didn't care for about the movie was Bruce Willis's character's wife, she kinda got on my nerves. Other than that, it's flawless. The dialogue is great, and the way the movie is done as seperate stories that tie-in together is even better. I just wish that they would've given Samuel L. Jackson's character another story, like John Travolta and Uma Thurman had.

By far my favorite movie ever. I can watch the gold watch (poo poo, the whole movie) over and over again and NEVER get tired of it. This is one of the few movies where, even though it is almost entirely populated by big name actors, i dont think "hey look its bruce willis", Its Butch Coolidge. Every character is perfectly acted, the scenes are hilarious and perfectly shot.. I dont think it comes much better.

Don't be scared
The first time I saw the movie I really didn't care for it that much. All I really liked was some of the catchy dialogue.

Fast forward to about a year later after a seond, third, fourth, ninth time watching it, and I absolutely love that movie. I finally felt that I truly understood it, and the dialogue was so drat good and "real" that I couldn't watch it enough. The dialogue in the film caught my attention because I thought, "That is the sort of stupid poo poo my friends and I talk about... now it is in a movie. Awesome". The characters were each very interesting and left me wanting to know more about each of them, not to mention they were all pretty cool. The screenplay is still one of the most original to date and was very cool once I figured it out. Like very few other films, this is one of those that if it came on everyday, I would be able to watch it every single day. I love it that much.

My favorite line will always be from the last diner scene where Jules says in the filthy animal discussion with Vincent: "Well sewer rat might taste like pumpkin pie but I'd never know because wouldn't eat the filthy mother fucker".

That line actually had me questioning my diet.

And, as Jules says in the diner scene, his boss's "filty laundry" is in the briefcase. Take that to mean what you want it to.

Obviously, there is no straight answer, and this will be debated endlessly on the Internet, but the theory I support argues that the briefcase contains Marsellus Wallace's soul, which was extracted through the back of his neck where the Band-Aid™ is later seen.

I truly love this movie. ...talk about replay value! However, I will offset the Butch/Avary fans by saying I think that whole story line could be cut, and I wouldn't even care. The Tarantino story line is about 196 times more entertaining and contains 100% less redneck, homosexual rapists.

Pulp Fiction is a movie that never gets old, and is really is the peak of Tarantino's work. It was actually one of the first DVDs I bought, and not suprisingly is the one I watch most.

As was already said, Samuel L. Jackson really steals the show. He's a hardass but he makes you laugh at the same time. "You're gonna blow? Well I'm a mushroom cloud making motherfucker, motherfucker!"

Easily a 5/5, and if you're going to form an opinion on Tarantino, base it on this film.

This used to be my favorite Tarentino film, but every time I watch it I become less intereested in it. I almost can't even watch the Bruce Willis scenes anymore... they bore me to death. All of the scenes with Jules and Vinnie are pure cinematic gold though.

I'll still give it a 4.5, it's an excellent movie overall.

Pulp Fiction is one of the best movies, if not the best movie, ever made. Here's why:

The name Marsellus Wallace is fantastic.
Quentin Tarantino's acting role is absolutely brilliant.
And there's that scene where Marsellus shoots the innocent bystander.

Daah, I heard that!
If there was ever a more overrated movie made, I haven't seen it.

I've tried to watch this start-to-finish countless times, and I just can't do it. The acting and dialogue is so contrived, it's downright irritating to watch. And don't think that I don't "get" how it's supposed to be a parody of itself. I get it. It's just executed poorly.

Without fail, about half way in to the movie, I ask myself "why am I supposed to care about any of this?" and fail to uncover an appropriate answer. When I've watched the second half, in desperate hope of seeing the genius and brilliance that I've been "missing", I've found myself flaccid, for lack of a better term.

Is it nice visually? Sure. Nothing at all groundbreaking, though. And after a while, it all falls in to Quentin's usual bag of cliches.

Yes, obviously a briefcase emitting gold light does not contain gold. Also, Ringo asks Jules "Is that what I think it is?" Would you have any idea what a soul in a briefcase would look like?

Still, I like your theory. And Pulp Fiction is a classic

now i might be wrong (which i am usually) but i heard in QT's first draft of the screenplay that it was actually was the diamonds from reservoir dogs (which was last seen in the possession of mr. pink if i remember right). but QT changed his mind & wanted to make it interesting by not saying.

Why, creating a mechanical British servant is no more eccentric than that tie you're wearing!
That whole "soul in the briefcase" thing is stupid and overdone. I love how in the explaination email that goes around it says, "Remember in the bible, how the devil takes your soul out of the back of your neck?"

Uh, that's not just nowhere in the Bible, it's no where in any biblical-related texts. Just yet another made up fact.

What's in the briefcase? A McGuffin. Pure and simple.

Fear The Bunny
This was a good movie, but thats it. It has style but not enough of it to keep going for as long as it does. If this movie had completely cut out Bruce Willis's character and left us with Samuel and Trovota's characters, this would be up there with Resevoir Dogs for beign a truly amazing movie.
But sadly this isn't the case and the middle of the movie feels like we accidentally switch channels over to lifetime to watch a washed up boxer's life and his annoying french girl friend. Dont get me wrong, the sodomy scene was classic if not extremely disturbing, but you cant help but get the feeling that it was all distraction from the true stars and attraction of the movie which were Trovota and Jackson. Every scen where these two were together (and especially those where they were with Tarentino) were just absolutely entertaining.

Fun Shoe
Great dialog, good twisting plot, lots of violence, and comedy.

This movie is all about lust. Everyone covets what's close but can't be reached::
  • a pocket watch
  • sexual gratification
  • the boss's wife
  • a new start
  • freedom
  • tranquil home life
  • good drugs
  • a great cup of coffee.

What's in the briefcase? Like the best McGuffins, it represents something that can't be obtained:

Unrequited desire - whatever might be in there, you can't have it.

Brilliant.

I use this movie as therapy after I have a bad day at work. I work for a store and I truly wish that Samuel could come work the service desk. I think I shall get a bracelet that says "What Would Sam DO?" The only thing I did not like was Bruce Willis giving "oral pleasure" to the most annoying woman ever. Other than that - it was great!

I saw an interview where Quentin Tarantino was asked that question and his answer was very plain:

"It's whatever you think it is."

He left it open to the viewers' imaginations. So when Ringo asks Jules "Is that what I think it is?" the answer is yes, no matter what you think it is. It's different for everyone.

My first thought the first time I saw the movie was that it was The Holy Grail (don't ask me why), so for me it's The Holy Grail. If you think it's Marcelles' soul, then it's Marcelles' soul. If you think it's a McGuffin (whatever that is, sounds like a bird or a car), then it's a McGuffin.

This is yet another reason why this movie is totally brilliant.

I absolutely love this movie, not even the waves and waves of imitators have been able to sour what's so great about it. Travolta (of all people) completely blows me away with one of the most natural, realistic performances I've ever seen. It's overrated, of course, but so is anything that achieves the kind of legendary status that Pulp Fiction has, so let's not allow that to take away from the enjoyment. One of my very favorite movies.
