Even if you catch up to the subbers you can never watch an episode RAW. There will be just so much important dialogue missing that nothing will make sense.

Ok, I need a little help sorting out everything.

I borrowed from my friend the entire DVD collection, which came out to 13 discs for the 110 episode series, plus 6 more discs for everything else.

- It has "My Conquest is the Sea of Stars" which I think is the first pilot movie, yes?
- It has "Golden Wings" which is the prequel movie done in the style of the manga.
- Is has "Overture to a New War" which is the one where Yang and Reinhard get into the ring formation battle and call it a draw, if I'm not mistaken.

But there's a lot of other weird stuff. There are several miniseries which are done with computerized coloring and somewhat more modern production.

- One of the miniseries is called "Those Who Revolt,"
- There's also "Survivors"
- "Morning's Dream, Night's Song"

They all appear to be prequel miniseries. What is all this stuff?

I just watched ep24 ("Victory for whose sake?") and drat! I was thinking that the only thing this show is really missing to be a top-notch space opera is an interesting hard sci-fi twist. And Yang Wenli delivered! Hetook out the Artemis Necklacewith science:science:!

edit: although it seems suspcious. Wouldn't massive things like that going that quickly that near to a planet have some sort of effect on it?
If you thought that was awesome, you need to see the battle in episodes 32-34.

Finally finished the series over the weekend.

LOGH is the only anime I've ever seen about politics, and I think that it made politics fun and exciting.

Also, would anyone happen to know what's the song at the end of episode 71? When the narrator says the battle is more difficult than the Empire expected? Cause it's the same song from when Geiersburg first fired on Iserlohn and I think the song's awesome.

Just finished episode 8. the Rosen-Ritter is badass as hell. There seems to be a lot less action, but I am suprisingly still drawn in, I enjoy watching the charecters scheme and plot against each other... Congradulations Man of Wax, you have officially captivated me with this show!
There will be several battles in the series where the scale is beyond anything that the Star Wars universe could have conceived of.

But here's the thing that really amazed me the most about the show... there will be an enormous battle, and one side will win, and as they celebrate their victory I sigh in relief. And then ten seconds later, they will show me the side that lost, and how one of the admirals mourns the loss of his fellow admiral, and I am nearly brought to tears as I hear him vow revenge for his dead friend.

Who does the "heroes" in the title refer to, the soldiers of the Empire or the Alliance? It refers to both. Both the Alliance and the Empire have their heroes and villains, and it's hard to take sides because they are all people you care about.

There will be people you hate, and then 50 episodes later, they will reveal a side of their character that you didn't know about. And then even if you still don't like them, you will respect them.

There will be times when good people will do some pretty horrible things. And it will remind you a lot of yourself.

A couple of months ago I saw a Korean movie called Roaring Currents, which was about Korean admiral Yi Sun-sin, a loyal admiral who was imprisoned by his own king because a Japanese spy infiltrated the Korean govt and spread rumors that Yi Sun-sin had intentions of taking over Korea with his popularity. His fleet of 169 ships was squandered and only 13 ships were left. The Korean govt panicked and released Yi from jail and ordered him to defend Korea from invasion with the 13 ships that were left. He led the Japanese invasion force into a narrow corridor where tidal forces would change depending on the time of day, and defeated a fleet of 330 ships using a combination of these tidal forces and mind games.

And I thought, holy poo poo, it's the inspiration for Yang Wenli

This show is pretty prude about it, and if you see nipples it's always because the soldiers are looking at some porn or because the historian in the documentary is talking about a period in history when people were whoring around.

There are a couple nude shots of women of character, but these are always "tasteful" like just butts in the shower or something.

New anime is actually not bad so far. I’m not a fan of the character designs and sad that they’re not using classical music but other than that the production value is great and the way they slightly rearranged the story is fine so far like introducing Yang as a punchline in the last 5 seconds of the first episode

Just hoping they get to the Artemis Necklaces, Iserlohn vs Geiersberg and other kaboom episodes and throw their newfangled animation budget at them

Getting by with insane odds is based on a true story though. Korean Admiral Yi Soon-Sin was jailed because a Japanese spy convinced the Korean nobles that Yi was going to seize power for himself. The Korean navy got decimated from 200 ships to 12 in his absence. When Yi was released he defeated the Japanese invasion force of 300 ships with those 12 ships by luring them into a narrow corridor where the direction of the tide changed depending on the time of day. At one point he faced the entire Japanese fleet with one ship: they couldn’t get in range to fire their cannons with the tide coming at them, but Yi’s ship could hit them because of his larger cannons.

Even if you ignore the obvious battle scenes being punched up by bombastic classical music, there are some great moments of irony, like the documentary where majestic and dignified music is being played against the history of Rudolph Goldenbaum right when they get to his personal failure and unhappiness. The show had a wicked sense of humor sometimes:

LOGH is great because it's one of the only shows that feels like it does logistics well.

One one hand it’s ridiculous that stealing food from civilians is portrayed as going into 1800’s peasant villages and taking a dozen crates of food by hand

On the other hand it’s refreshing that logistics is addressed at all on an animated show

I watched some of the new series and…

Besides the lack of classical music (and an amazing selection of classical only rivaled by the Hannibal tv series) the direction/storyboarding is just not great

I was looking forward to the battle between Iserlohn and Geiersburg but seeing Geiers zip around like a space fighter was just ridiculous. Even with the shoestring crayon budget of the original they were able to give the sense that these were massive, massive death stars. Such a shame, because I was looking forward to it having a much better animation budget and flashy cg effects

Best endings are when they cram more content into the episode so that it spills over into the credits and the narrator doesn’t have time to spoil the next episode

Edit: oh poo poo they still preview the next episode. Umm, if it’s a generic end credit just skip right away and if the episode bleeds into the credits skip once the episode content is over
