I think that the biggest deal in the "restored" versions is that a lot of the space-combat stuff is 3D animation instead of painted cel. I can imagine that it wouldn't be hard to animate LoGH stuff--the spaceships are basically flying rectangles with the occasional fillet. And nothing transforms! LoGH would almost seem like a vacation after something like "Macross Zero".

From what I've seen, it's basically the same action and composition as in the original, only reproduced in 3D. The result is that you have the same action but without the perspective issues on starships that turn or maneuver on-screen. It isn't like "Revenge of the Sith" where each side has all 10,000 ships on the screen at once.

You might be mis-remembering "Star Blazers" or "Robotech" (some of the episodes in the back half of "Robotech" have a giant spaceship fight that comes out of nowhere and goes right back there.) Or you might just have seen this before..."LoGH" and Central Anime have both been around since forever. (Although it's kind of ironic that of all the early-nineties fansubber groups, CA is the one that survived, given that they were the butt of many a grammar joke.) edit: I could be thinking of Arctic, yeah...I hardly even remember those days myself. SeedyV posted:I've caught up with the latest CA has to offer at last. The manner in which this series forms such bonds between myself and the characters portrayed is nothing short of amazing. It sounds pretty silly now but I threw out my own salute during Episode 72. What a hell of a way for Bucock to go. As for the "democracy musings": It would be really interesting to see the funding structure that produced this show. Did they actually say "you will make X number of episodes", or did they just let production run until everyone was satisfied? It's clearly a great benefit for the show that it's so drawn-out; I get the idea that if this had been made today, it would be a 26-episode TV series, with each episode being 18 minute of CRAZY SPACE BATTLE and four minutes of "we must defend Democracy/The Empire/The Will Of The People/Our Profit Margin/Love/Peace/Justice!"

Catching up on The Series So Far... #89: This really should not have been so horrendously out-of-character. There's a lot of tragedy and grandeur in this story, and it isn't well-served by turning the Emperor Of The Whole Galaxy into a shoujo-manga teenager.

On the one hand, in this age of sub-only brick releases, it's possible that we might see LOGH on a store shelf. You could probably convince someone to do for LOGH what was done for VOTOMS...and I bet that, with the proper marketing, LOGH could really get a following. (Particularly if they translate the spaceship-data books and sell them to wargame wonks.) On the other hand, Japanese property owners tend to have insane ideas about licensing fees. "Oh, the standard fee is 2000 Yen per episode. Yes, LOGH is over a hundred episodes; what's the problem? Just charge more money!" On the gripping hand...it takes me a loooong time to repurchase shows that I've already seen in fansubs. PlanetES was in stores for two years before I bought any of it, and if it hadn't been for the brick I still wouldn't own all of it...

creamyhorror posted:I noticed that earlier in this thread a few people commented that they didn't like the "new" animation on the DVD version. So, I marathonned the last dozen episodes during a long plane trip. Whoa. That, uh, kind of came out of left field! It's a bit unfortunate that LOGH succumbed to Whoops The Series Is Over syndrome, where the last bits of a series are vastly sped-up compared to the rest of it. However, that's a relative term; characters who'd get a quick one-line scene in other animes get plenty of screen time in LOGH. Although I think that Mashengo had a better end than Schenkopp. I mean, come on--here's this battle-hardened combat-reflexes Total Badass, and he gets axed in the back by some scrub who was too scared to stand up? "Oh gee I hear these metallic clanking noises from behind me, but I'm too tired to turn around". STOOPID. Not to mention the implausibility of it--so here's axe-resistant space armor, but you can get enough of a swing to hack through it while in a prone position? It might be a speed thing; like, anything moving fast enough to penetrate heavy armor would set off the Zephyr particles, and of course any directed-energy weapon would do it. spoilers for this discussion: Mashengo's death should tell you how important it is to have Zephyr particles spread around; otherwise they just break out the lasers and waste your rear end no matter how much armor you've got. Of course, it's really more like "the author really liked the idea of dudes fighting with axes, so he made up an extremely vague justification for why this was the case." See also Dune, where we have a universe with lasers and artillery and nuclear bombs and yet everyone fights with knives. And the real argument in favor of axes and armor isn't verbal at all. It's the fact that without axes, we would not have THIS: The Therminador posted:
