Nice try, asshole

Another wonderful work from Wes Anderson, who is 4 for 4 in my book. The main charge being levelled against this film is that it's style over substance, but I think what people are missing is that this is more of a pure comedy than Rushmore or Tenenbaums. It doesn't have the same poignancy but it makes up for that with laughs. Although Anderson's humor is very dry, almost British in a sense, so perhaps it doesn't amuse everyone. I, however, was very amused and, as always, quite smitten with his sense of style and art direction. I don't find it overly quirky at all.

Perhaps it's not as meaningful as Anderson's last two films, but for me it was one of the most enjoyable of 2004. Rating: 4.5

Just finished watching this. I'm not the biggest Wes Anderson supporter but I can recognize talent in filmmaking when I see it.

The dialogue and cinematography were top notch, as was the haitian david bowie and the shoot-outs. Also loved Jeff Goldblum's character and the three-legged dog.

The downsides to the movie were the lack of substance and how hard it was to become interested in. Definitely a background movie. Owen Wilson's character is annoying as all hell -- Murray's relationship with Defoe was much more engaging.

3/5

Kate Blanchett's son is now Steve Zissou's favourite age, and Anderson has had time to put out another couple of films. Is it time to rewatch this movie? Is it still as polarizing?
EDIT: just realized that this forum is not for discussions, sorry
