Random Overlooked Puro #2 I just watched a really dandy deathmatch that would take anyone's mind away from Tiger Jeet Singh. Peeps ITT probably know of a mister Necro Butcher. He of the utter craziness and taking of beatings. Well, I don't think he's the best deathmatch guy out there today. No, that title rightfully belongs to someone who you'd never expect: a gimmick imitator. http://www.wkmedia.net/jhw4/sourcepictures/Heavy3%20copy.jpg The man getting carved up is Abdullah Jr. Kobayashi, a Japanese Abdullah the Butcher. Only instead of 1/2* matches involving a fork, it's much better matches involving dozens of light tubes and full-body bleeding from said tubes. Working out of Big Japan, Abby Jr has been in three of my favorite deathmatches ever. The first was from December '03 against Ryuji Ito (the carver in the pic above), a 200 Light Tube deathmatch that managed to use logical build and solid pacing to keep the momentum going from spot to spot. And oh lord when it's 200 light tubes you know it's gonna be a lot of sick spots. They take what would be a pretty decent match and toss in light tubes to add to the moves, leading to some great nearfalls and dramatic set-ups. Then came a match in November '05 against Daisuke Sekimoto, a thick motherfucker who's strong as hell. A mere 100 light tubes for this one. Sekimoto methodically worked Abby Jr over with the tubes, including repeated bodyslams onto them. Then came the stiff as five motherfuckers clubbing blows to the back and I swear you will mark out for *clubbing blows to the back in a deathmatch*. Then he starts unloading his set of traditional Japanese finishers on a horribly bloody Kobayashi, who refuses to stay down. Kobayashi makes the comeback and while Sekimoto doesn't take much punishment relative to the fat boy he still takes a ton. Final match, which I just watched, is a December 21 '05 rematch of Kobayashi vs Ito. This was a (100? 200?) light tube scaffold deathmatch, where a shockingly sturdy brudge was made high above the ring between two big ladders. Combining the kind of spots seen in their first match with a couple monster bumps off the scaffold, they were able to play off of both of the above bouts and the finish has some stellar nearfalls. This match got a crowd bigger than any Zero-One drew that year, 3500. It's hard to describe what he brings to the table. There's a certain Sabu-esque 'gently caress it' attitude, there's his willingness to get covered in viscera (the actual word not the black man), there's the sense that he has some idea where things are going. Akebono has been added to the latest NOAH card, as he and Rikio take on Kobashi and Izumida. IZU~ WWE and Lesnar continue to dish it out, this time over a planned apperance on New Japan's 2/19 Sumo Hall show. I think this could at long last be the climax because the judge has adopted a 'bring it on' attitude towards WWE and they have plenty of time to make the best case possible (unlike when they tried to Brock-block before the 1/4 show). Several New Japan wrestlers are unhappy with their latest contract offers but it's possible none of them would get better money elsewhere. Kakihara might have to retire with a neck injury.

Tanahashi has talent but in most cases needs to be carried. I'd honestly say the same thing about Styles because I'm not a fan of spotfests, but in AJ's case at least he has said spotfests. When Tanahashi has an off night he's very bland because his offense isn't particularly great. I would not expect much for Styles vs Tanahashi.

I'd recommend getting the YouSendIt downloader for using with these files. I don't know if it's just me, but more often than not I get an error when I try to download a file normally from YouSendIt. That problem stopped once I started using the YSI Downloader, so it's worth having if you encounter the same problem as I do.

New Japan is SLASHING the money it's paying wrestlers, after pay cuts already happened two years ago. The roster is also being trimmed. Some guys are gone, some are probably gone, some will go to part-time. All of this needed to happen years ago, but at this point they're the :gm: of puro. Simon Inoki staged some sort of takeover of Inoki Office, and the extent to which that's real or not and the extent to which Inoki Office was substantive has yet to be revealed. It's all about the Yenjamins. Maybe Yukes is the driving force behind the cuts, but those cuts are real. They aren't going to pay jack poo poo to a Tatsutoshi Goto because nobody else would either, ditto guys like Nagao and Wataru and Sammy and Takemura, and I think Yoshie figures he can make enough freelancing to be worth it. NJ is cutting the pay for anyone they possibly can.

What are the best resources to use for following present day puro? Are Japanese workers inherently more talented than American workers? It seems like some hardcore puro fans act as if anyone overseas is the perfect offspring of Benoit and Angle, but guys like A-Train - who was pretty much poo poo on when he was in the E - are able to be gainfully employed in the bigger name promotions. What gives? Who were the ten best puro workers in 2005?

I might enjoy the work of KENTA and Go Shiozaki and Makoto Hashi and Kensuke Sasaki and the Florida Brothers, you might not. Which is why I tend to recommend certain shows from certain promotions. For instance... -New Japan's 2004 G-1 Climax tournament. Solid matches in the Japanese style that tell stories based on each wrestler's style. Shows off some of the variety you don't get in a rather cookie-cutter fed like WWE. -NOAH's July '04 and July '05 Tokyo Dome shows. Good variety, good matches by pretty much everyone's estimation. -Dragon Gate 1/14/05. A very easy to enjoy fed, and this show combines storylines with some dynamite action. -All Japan 7/26/05. I haven't seen all of it but I'm told this was their show of the year. Some big matches and a good look at what they can bring to the table. That's just present-day of course. The best puro came from the '90s. I watch a lot of wrestling. A LOT of wrestling. Week in, week out, for years. Ever since I graduated from college (May '03) I've hardly watched any WWE, mostly just the pimped stuff. And I'm a lot happier for it and I have more than I can watch thanks to the internet. Between old-school and current day, US majors and indies and Japan, there's enough in the way of great matches and storylines and feuds that I feel fine not tearing my hair out over crappy Sports Entertainment segments in-between cookie-cutter punchfests. Now that's not to say I think ill of those who watch and enjoy WWE, merely that I'm of the opinion that 4 hours a week watching it can just as easily be spent on other wrestling.

I'm sure more seasoned Japanese wrestling fans will find my list all hosed up, but there ya go.

NOAH ran the Nippon Budokan today, claiming a sell-out though they might not have. Main results included the team of Akebono & Rikio winning with a stacked splash, Team Misawa beating Team Sasaki, KENTA defending the junior title over Marufuji, and Akiyama winning the heavyweight title from Taue. I just watched KENTA vs. Marufuji and Akiyama vs. Taue from the 1/22/06 NOAH Budokan show, here are my thoughts: KENTA vs. Marufuji - Pretty drat great match. There were a couple sloppy spots but once they started to get into the "serious" phase of the match it kicked into overdrive. So many awesome nagareshiki (top rope "avalance-style") moves. Afterwards I read about some of the history leading up to the match and it made it that much better. Probably around ****1/4. Highly recommended. I don't think it's funny They were one of the top promotions in the world not a year and a half ago from an in-ring standpoint, and now they're utterly missable. The 2004 G-1 was so good, as were '02 and '03, and of the guys in those tournaments there's no Takayama, Minoru Suzuki, Nishimura, Yoshie, Shibata, Sasaki, Akiyama, Tenryu, Blue Wolf and maybe Kanemoto. I'll take that crew over Tenzan, Chono, Nagata, Nakanishi, Nakamura, Tanahashi and Makabe any day of the week.

I just watched Takehiro Murahama & Jushin "Thunder" Lyger vs Naomichi Marufuji & KENTA from the 2003 GHC Jr. Tag Team Title Tourney Final and thought it was an incredible match with fantastic action, striking and near falls that made me think the match was over, and I knew exactly how the match ended already.
