Artists and labels often release free sample tracks on their websites. This thread is for posting links to good FREE mp3s you've found (legally!)

Please, no links to music blogs with unauthorized mp3s or to mp3s on your own hosting; this thread is for free mp3s officially released by bands or record labels.

Here's an amazing selection of mp3s from Matador Records (Check out "All My Friends" by Pavement! Rad!).

Here's a link to The Tiny's single "Closer" from Eyeball Records, which is a fabulous song and deserves to be heard.

http://www.weirdal.com
Currently has a sample of a new track by Weird Al, a parody of James Blunt's "Beautiful."

You can thank Pavement for basically starting the trend of obtuse, tuneless, incomprehensible American indie music. They couldn’t write a decent tune, their drummer was a burned out old punk nobody who couldn’t keep time, and their production values were bottom-of-the-barrel.

Awesome thread idea, Mr. Manic.

I'm in the mood to dance like a crazy white person. So here's some good music for that:

The Gossip - Standing in the Way of Control : The typicaly simplified blues rock dance band goes quasi-disco and drat is it good.

Har Mar Superstar - Cry 4 Help: Trashy yet oh so funky.

Old Time Relijun - Vampire Sushi - I want to say this band is like a dancey Velvet Underground. If you like them more free tunes availbile here.

All taken from label sites and are free and legal.

Craw is an independent band from Cleveland, OH and have been together for over 13 years. Our 1st three full length recordings were recorded with the help of our good friend Steve Albini. The newest one, entitled Bodies for Strontium 90, was engineered by our good friend Bill Korecky at his fantastic Mars studios, and is available on Hydrahead Industries. You can order it direct from there.

Craw were/are an excellent band. Recommended for fans of Today is the Day, Keelhaul, and late 90's noisecore in general. This is their entire discography, free for the downloading. But consider buying the cds if you see them, they're worth the money. http://www.craw.com

Click the skull on this page to download Agoraphobic Nosebleed and Isis' excellent cover of Melvins' awesome song "Boris." http://agoraphobicnosebleed.com/

Australia's HALO has two or more of their records free for downloading, but I can't remember the site. If I can find it, I'll edit this post, or if someone else knows what I'm talking about, awesome. RIFYL Neurosis, noise in general, Godflesh or Jesu.

edit: Internet Archive has them, I can't find the original. Massive Corporate Disease and Degree Zero Point Of Implosion

edit 2: these are legal under creative commons, and were originally distributed by the label, I believe. They are out of print and so they made them available this way.

Kittitas is a band featuring Pat Conner, brother of the fat Conner brothers from the Screaming Trees, a guy from 90s grunge band Seaweed, and some other dudes from Seattle. They sound like a mix between the Screaming Trees and the Afghan Whigs (and by extension, Mark Lanegan and Greg Dulli's solo projects, the latter especially).
I enjoy their music a lot and the great thing is there's the equivalent of 2 albums up there for completely free download. It's a shame this style of music isn't very trendy at the moment and they're unsigned because I think they would do well on an indie label. On the up side .. they're giving away the music instead!

http://gentlemensgunclub.com

If you haven't seen my posts before, I write instrumental post-rockish music and record/produce/program/mix/master everything myself. So basically everything you hear on the recordings is me, Its all recorded in my bedroom and there are absolutely no mics or amps involved. 100% digital baby!

I also recently printed an EP of music which you can buy here or if you just want to listen to it and burn your own copy, you can get all the music from here. I'm not making any money on the album, I just printed it to legitimize the music in my own mind. But if you want to buy it that'd be cool as well. I think the artwork is kinda nifty. (PS. yes the spelling/punctuation errors are intentional, I wanted to see who actually reads liner notes)

I know a few people on the forums like this stuff, and hopefully a few more will find it from this thread.

If you're into trance http://djkristoff.com under his mixes section has a bunch of various euro/hard trance mixes that he made up for download. You can also catch him doing a live show called "Canadian Culture" on http://di.fm every so often, there is a link up on the top of the page titled "Radio" which lets you know when the next one will be and also linked to download previous installments of it.

di.fm is actually a pretty good mp3 goldmine if you enjoy trance/house/drum & bass usually up and coming dj's that get spots on di.fm's streams have web pages and the mixes they make will be on their page as well. So if you like a mix you can usually google the dj name and locate the mix you enjoy(most of the time).

Time for some THRASH!
IntruderTech thrash from Tennesee. They strike me as Forbidden meets Among the Living Anthrax with a dash of Death Angel. They used to have their first album on there for free as well, but Psycho Savant is just as cool.

Heathen This is my new favorite band. Breaking the Silence is great except for the Sweet cover and Victims of Deception is practically perfect.

Anacrusis More tech-thrash. The first album rips and the rest of their stuff is inconsistant. Beware that the singer sometimes does the Death Angel six-year-old girl screams.

Slaughter Not the glam band, the tear-your-head-off-with-a-chainsaw one. STRAPPADO!!
