What's wild to me about the bicycle trials is that they aren't pedaling/spinning the back wheel for a boost, just jumping with their legs. I can't even jump those distances without a bike.

That makes it all the more impressive that they're putting out so much power but you can barely perceive their legs or the wheel moving.

Slavvy posted:It's not power, it's torque. Torque is twist force and yeah humans can make a lot. Power is work, in this case torque, done over time, which humans are super bad at. Otoh a small 2t can be stalled by a spanner pull at idle, but will happily out-pull a fleet of single teste'd spandex roid sperm when it's on song, because it makes thousands of tiny pedal turns instead of a small amount of really big ones. So time is not the denominator here? My thought was that they must be applying a lot of torque over an extremely short period of time in order to get the bikes to leap.

I had some issues with tubes leaking near the valve stem on my bicycle and I fixed it by getting tubes with shorter presta valves. My guess is the longer stem made it too easy to put stress around the base. Possibly a dumb idea, but you could try taking a patch from one of those tube repair kits and preemptively apply it around the stem, which would act as reinforcement and as a spacer away from the hole.

Why do people dislike the sxs so much? Also the trucks should have to haul furniture and however much remains intact at the end of the stage should factor into their score.

The problem for me is that I have a very strong mental price anchor. I wouldn't buy an ebike for more than $2000 because that's motorcycle territory for me. $3k for 250 cc, $5k for 500cc, and $10k for hypernaked, supersport. So $15K for a 450 seems bonkers, no matter how pretty the bike. For the same reason, I can't bring myself to buy a super cub, because it would be more expensive than my current bike. Admittedly, this is not completely rational. Also, I heard Leno got hurt again?

You get told over and over that motorcycling is so dangerous, all this rage against cagers, and then you see these videos and realize so many riders have more horsepower than brains, making big, dumb, obvious mistakes. Even when a car driver is at fault, it's not even worth getting mad about -- no one changes their mind when you yell at them or rev bomb. The best way to get back at a driver almost ruining your day is to continue to have a relaxed and fun ride. At the same time, I remember that I can be dumb sometimes too, and poo poo can go sideways pretty fast. Keeps me humble.

It reminds me of those complicated cakes you see in competition shows that are mostly fondant. It's an entirely aesthetic pursuit, which I can appreciate on those terms. But if I want to actually eat a cake, just give me something sweet and fluffy with messy icing.

I am nothing if not a dork. This is the green electric bike: https://superhumanbikes.com/products/babymaker-standard-and-pro-eu It basically flattens all the hills in my neighborhood. I picked it up for $400 on craigslist almost new so I'm quite pleased with the overall bargain.

What's really funny is that all the versions of the bike without "babymaker" printed on the frame are sold out. Seems like a perverse incentive to give your product a cringey name.

Finger Prince posted:The irony is after any significant time spent on that prostate punisher of a seat, you won't be making any babies without medical intervention. First thing I did was take to a bike shop to get a replacement saddle. This was the response I got in the ebike thread: Nitrox posted:The battery on those bicycles are extremely hard to separate from the frame, and are not serviceable in any foreseeable way. Yeah, that's the tradeoff with having a hidden battery. To take it out, you have to remove the fork. The rest of the components seem solid though. The bike mechanic at the shop was impressed with the quality of the frame. If you're looking for similar stealth ebike, but less obnoxious and from more reputable company, someone in the ebike thread bought one of these: https://ride1up.com/product/roadster-v2/ Anyway, it's the holiday season. Let's see more family portraits.
