I goofed with Debbie Harry whether she was born in Canada or not. I know she's mostly famous for her career in America (a lot of which was before Videodrome, of course). As for the porn, good for Canada. As long as it doesn't bubble out of your TV and send you into a downward spiral of murder, mayhem, madness, and masochism.

Those masks look like Sacco and Vanzetti. Thus I think it's either that recent documentary that was in theaters, or more likely the 1971 docu-drama http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sacco_e_Vanzetti Too fitting: according to Wikipedia, a song from the movie was used in The Life Aquatic. Also, could be The Brinks Job http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Brink%27s_Job . Though Brinks Armored Car wasn't exactly a bank.

So if I understand this correctly, they kept the impending new version of Seventh Seal an complete secret until now? Is that some kind of record for a Criterion?

Welp I broke down and bought Throne of Blood and The Third Man. There were a couple more I would have considered but B&N's (Peabody, MA store) selection didn't have them. I'm either going to online or go to another store, but I got time since according to the cashier the sale lasts until 8/3. It was helpful that B&N seperates most of its Criterions into a separate display.

Thanks Steveie and Magic Hate Ball. I thought there was going to be stuff that was left off or unique to the original release or something. Jeez, it's not even close. Aside from the minor pictureboxing thing on the new one, which I don't care about, it's clear the new one is superior. How much money is B&N making off this sale. Both times I've been to one I've either joined someone browsing the Criterion rack or someone follows me in. Otherwise the DVD section is a ghost town. At the very least, it's gotten me to buy 3 Criterions which I wouldn't have bought in store... or at least with them. Funny thing is I don't remember much of a markup when I worked at Best Buy... I bought Videodrome for like $30 with the employee discount. The discount was buying the item at cost plus 5-10% (depending on product and BB's DVD cost was usually pretty close to retail). Aside from DVD sets (like TV shows), it was my experience that markup for "normal" DVDs wasn't big. Not even Criterions were very big either. So here we are at B&N, which we all know usually has absurd movie prices normally. Their sale could be loss leader theory or Criterion cut them a break temporarily. I did notice that they only keep 1 copy of a movie out at any time (fake urgency factor). I'm fascinated how they decided to sell these things at closeout prices. Is Ran worth owning? Rashamon? Yojimbo and its sequel (sidestory?) Sanjuro? There's my Kurosawa fix. Other movies I may possibly find interesting?

My sole retail experience was with Worst Buy so it could be I'm biased. I also could be jaded from the absurd number of commercials advertising limited offers and "strict limit of x per caller"Criminal Minded posted:Every one of those Kurosawas is fantastic, good call. Thanks. Mostly action and supense stuff. I realize Criterion doesn't do many popcorn flicks... now, anyway, since they went OoP. Alright, I admit I kinda want to find the old letterbox only release of Armageddon just to see the like 1/2 hour of deleted scenes that may start to fill the craters of plotholes, unexplained developments, missing information, and other fun stuff about movies But seriously, something with a lot of action (if it has intelligence and/or realism in it, that would be ideal). Cacator posted:If you've never seen a Kurosawa I'd recommend Yojimbo first because it's awesome in every way. Which reminds me that Kagemusha blu-ray comes out next month and I need to spend some more money. I've seen Seventh Samauri and Throne of Blood (I was very happy to see that in store). I'll keep that in mind.

Argh... Don't wander into a B&N right now because it requires a Herculean effort to not buy Criterions (what with the sale near done). I got tagged for Ran and Rashomon. I know Rashomon is a good movie so I picked it up, but I grabbed the Essential Art version since I'm cheap. Is there anything of value on the full blown Criterion that I would miss?

Thanks for the advice, but I think I made the right choice. None of those extras scream "must have" to me. The full Criterion wasn't on store shelf and it is a bit of a blind buy for me (Kurosawa proclivities not withstanding). My BluRay plans are on indefinite hold until I actually have money, my own place, and some resemblance of leisure time. At one point I thought owning a PS3 would be great but for a whole host of reasons it's not good and neither is a standalone player. I think I have like 2 Criterions I'd consider double dipping on, and for those it's hardly required. Edit: Funny you mention the EAH version of Grand Illusion... I mulled over buying it but decided on more Japanese hack and slash

Best Buy store inventories vary based on perceived clientele. The chain classifies stores based on a name of a man and a woman that dictates inventory, security, fixtures, promos, etc. "Customer Centriciity" The Best Buy in Danvers, MA, for example was classified as "Barry" (at least when I worked there). Barry was decidedly high end so you'd see several Criterions on shelf, sometimes in place of standard editions (ie Videodrome was only available as the Criterion when I was buying). I don't remember if there was a separate Criterion set, however. Mind you this was 4 years ago so things may have changed. Criterion DVDs, because of their higher MSRP, were a little against Best Buys loss leader strategy to get people in store; hence you can find Criterions in store but I bet it's the mainstream or really popular titles. B&N probably has a bigger catalog (though B&N apparently has fewer copies of each in store)ONE YEAR LATER posted:Probably gonna sell them on ebay at a few bucks below MSRP and make bank off of stupid people. I bet you are right. The kid may keep a couple himself, but the senario sounds like classic Ebay bait

Used to be alphabetical and I'm a poster child for having so many it becomes impossible to keep them that way. There's still a general alphabetical listing, but generally it's the most recent purchase going at easy reach. I do still seperate TV shows, though that's pretty small collection.

As far as Armageddon goes, they didn't even get the rights to do a re-issue with an anamorphic transfer. I doubt we'll see a BluRay. However they did get a lot of bounce with "normal" or mainstream movie watchers: for a while FX's "DVD on TV" presentations for the movie used a liberal helping of the Criterion's features and deleted scenes (IIRC, anyway). I'd actually like to see Criterion do a release of Bay's Transformers, but I know that's wishful thinking

As I said before, the Armageddon Criterion is also the only one with like 1/2 hour of deleted scenes that maybe/maybe not makes the movie more comprehensible. Still love the movie. I hope Criterion keeps up the high quality titles. I think the problem with the Michael Bay Criterions were that they cost the same price as the more "important" films when Disney should have released regular DVDs with some of those special features.

I'm not really sure why I printed out all those 25% and $5 off coupons. I'm not really sure why I decided to pop into B&N today and what I was looking for. All know is I ended up with Yujimbo (what number Kurosawa is this?) and The Human Condition (blind buy, but since I like WW2 stuff and loved Letters from Iwo Jima... plus it came out to something stupid like $25). What's scary? I still have plenty of money.

I was thinking along the lines of main character drafted into the Imperial Japanese Army and the various ways that affects life. I am in no way expecting the battle royale that occurs in that film of course. I'm talking about things like fighting for your country when you can't reconcile what your country wants to do with your own personal feelings. Seperation from loved ones. I imagine The Human Condition is a lot more more complex than I'm making it out to be.

Little bit of bad news or perhaps prognostication. I seems Universal, at least according to Digital Bits with the 11/30 post http://digitalbits.com/#mytwocents , will be releasing the BluRay for Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. So no Criterion. (I sort of remember the movie getting an HD DVD release) Thats sad news for anyone waiting on buying the Criterion DVD in hopes they'd release a BluRay (with all the extras). Worst case scenario that means Criterion will lose the license and the DVD will go OOP. Of course I could just be . Universal and Criterion do have a good relationship. Universal has licensed Criterion produced features before (like all those Scorsese commentaries) Some of those new transfers in the Kurosawa set look really nice, but no way am I double dipping. Vertov. Hey, could be. I imagine that they would want to release that again if possible. I don't have any hard numbers, but it is easily the Criterion I've personally seen in people's houses or apartments or dorm rooms. Lots of anecdotal evidence has to count for something, right?

The Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas case is perfect for the fim. Brazil (well I have the anamorphic one...) is a personal favorite of mine. Feels substantial in my hands and always draws the eyes. And what else could I say about Videodrome? Replica Betamax Tape? Genius.

Bown posted:but can any recommend some for great films where the Criterion version really is the absolute definitive one? azechiel is absolutely right about Brazil. I highly recommend Videodrome both for the extras and the packaging. Dazed and Confused has deleted scenes that the other DVD doesn't, but I really don't care about that movie. Criterion's Seven Samurai is legendary at this point... just the one in that Kurosawa DVD set supposedly has better picture quality (with like no extras) than their previous DVD. Well there's been 3 Criterion DVD releases of Seven Samurai and that doesn't include the BluRay. You almost need a program to tell them apart. Criterion's The Human Condition looks a 1000 times better than the clips I've seen of an import release of that film. There used to be a non-Criterion The Man Who Fell To Earth that used the same video transfer, but I think its OoP

azechiel posted:So I recently discovered that my school library has a very large collection of both Criterion DVDs and Laserdiscs. So my question to you is what are some lesser known titles released on Criterion that are really good? If you have access to a Laserdisc player and love James Bond, Criterion had LDs of the 1st 3 Bond movies. Do I really need to state... oh screw it Dr. No, From Russia with Love, and Goldfinger. What's so special about these LD'? Criterion put together commentary tracks for all of them from archival and then new interviews. These commentary tracks are famous (or if you're EON Productions infamous) for all sorts of off color, adult, hilarious, etc annecdotes about the production of the movies. I loved listening to all three. Did you know several of the crew for Dr. No sold large quantity of mariqana during the filming of the movie? That one of the editors of Goldfinger had a man crush on Sean Connery? etc. You learna a lot about the movies too. EON won't touch them for obvious reasons If you're school had them and you had a LD (who does actually...) they're wonderful to listen to. (I think I already gushed about these a while back

Digital Bits reports Universal will release a BluRay version of Spartacus (with stereotypical coverart to boot). I think that means Criterion wont do a Blu for that movie. Hopefully it does not lead to the Spartacus DVD going OoP. No word if the Blu is just the theatrical or the early 90's restoration (like the Criterion)

I have a strong feeling I'll have to double dip too since his birthday is in November... And then we come to Paths to Glory My inner Kubrick geek is very happy.
