I haven't seen the new Criterion release yet, but I own the old disc. It's a pretty harrowing look into schizophrenia with a good lead performance and amazing sound design. I recommend at least a rental. DVDFile, though, gave it a pretty scathing review and called it the "worst film Criterion has released so far". Very very undeserved criticism, in my opinion.

I haven't seen it yet so I can't speak to it, but KEANE (the third film by the same director and of similar subject matter) was my favorite film of 2005. Damien Lewis' performance in that movie is one of my favorite performances ever. That said, I didn't like Claire Dolan, his second film. Still really looking forward to Clean, Shaven though.

No, you're absolutely right. They could definitely branch out more. I'm kind of hoping the Eclipse line will grow to more than 3-5 titles a month and start to fill in the gaps where Criterion is lacking.

What is Eclipse? Is it a Criterion competitor?

I also am a bit broken up about the lack of Iranian and African stuff.

Side note: Does anyone want to trade the KICKING AND SCREAMING Criterion DVD for CLEAN, SHAVEN straight up? I bought K&S blind, watched it once, want nothing more to do with it. It's in pristine condition.

I don't like to bitch about cover art that much, but I'm really hating that "C" logo. It's so intrusive.

Word, but hey, if branding helps 'em, they can have all the help in the world as far as I'm concerned. So hard for me to believe that Criterion could push into the general consciousness but hey. Mo' money, mo' releases.

#397 - IVAN'S CHILDHOOD

* New, restored high-definition digital transfer
* Video appreciation of filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky and Ivan’s Childhood, featuring Vida T. Johnson, coauthor of The Films of Andrei Tarkovsky: A Visual Fugue New video interviews with cinematographer Vadim Yusov and actor Nikolai Burlyaev
* New and improved English subtitle translation
* PLUS: A booklet featuring an essay by film scholar Dina Iordanova and new translations, by Robert Bird, of "Between Two Films," Andrei Tarkovsky’s essay about Ivan’s Childhood, and "Ivan’s Willow," a poem by the director's father, Arseny Tarkovsky

Didn't see this one coming. Mildly interested in this one, but again, Tarkovsky is hit-or-miss.

YESSSSSSSSSSSS

I was just thinking yesterday about how this was the only of his feature films unavailable on region 1. So happy...

drat you. I want a copy of this but DVDPlanet won't sell me one because they think it's a porno and I don't have a credit card with which to buy "pornos"

Why not pay seven dollars more then, and get it from some other site?

Does anyone have the William Klein eclipse set? It sounds obscure (even by Criterion standards) and bizarre enough to be very interesting.

I was considering this set but then caught Who Are You Polly Magoo? on Sundance Channel by chance and wasn't really able to stay with it. Very entertaining for about 45 minutes, and then the back half of it went completely off the deep end. Not my bag, but then again neither was Discreet Charm, so perhaps you should rent one or two of the discs before going with a purchase.

I bought Ivan's Childhood, The Fire Within, Sisters, Umberto D., Elevator to the Gallows and Solaris.

I never thought of getting High and Low, that's a good idea.

You can have mine if you want to trade. It's the old one with the yellow cover. I've also got Branded to Kill, Kicking and Screaming, and The Life and Death of Col. Blimp to throw around.

I'm looking for Mouchette, Les Dames du Bois de Boulogne, any or all of the Winter Light Trilogy (I'll pay or supplement for that), Renoir, Godard, or anything else that floats your boat.

A tip for the buy-one-get-one-free sale. It applies to box sets too, but you have to be careful.

- If you buy a box set for $64 together with a single DVD for $32, DDD takes off the $32, for a total of $64.
- If you buy two box sets for $64 each and two single DVDs for $32, it takes off both $32 discs for a total of $128.
- But if you buy just the two box sets at the same time, that's a total of $64. Then buy the two single discs together for a total of $32. Grand total of $96 instead of $128.

$32 savings! Which coincidentally is the cost of yet another Criterion that comes with yet another free one.

I assume you can apply the discount code twice. If not, maybe open two accounts with two credit cards.

Hey, I just realized I have a copy of Boudu Saved from Drowning I'm trying to get rid of, and I'd love to trade it for Life and Death of Colonel Blimp. Does that work for you?

Sadly I want none of your Boudu but PM me if you've got anything else in the hopper cause I have no use for these DVDs.

DDD finally got to me, though. I picked up the Bergman trilogy (Glass Darkly, Silence, and Winter Light) along with the Dreyer box. Two for one box sets, that's nice.

Now I'm trying to think of something that would accompany Dreyer's Joan of Arc....

My two box sets shipped Wednesday 8/6. Ordered em on 7/23. But getting the Dreyer box and the Bergman Winter Light trilogy for $64 shipped is well worth the wait.

Yeah, I'm compelled to watch it since it had to be more interesting to make than the film itself.

For me this is no exaggeration. Button was the most technically impressive movie I think I've ever seen. Every frame is perfect! But it is basically a two and a half hour Chanel commercial, imo.
