I'm actually really excited to see the Naruse film, if only because I've heard such great things about his work. Other than that, I'd love to see Criterion come out with more Imamura. The Pornographers is one of favorite films I've seen recently.

Any word on whether they plan to release anymore Malick? I recently bought the gorgeous Criterion Days of Heaven, but I'm holding off on Badlands because I have a feeling it's just around the corner.

Just got the new newsletter:

This is seriously some of the best movie related news I've heard in a while. Just today I was at Kim's Video looking at the multitude of Tarantino-branded Chungking Express DVDs that they had (and which I already own thanks to an amazing SA Secret Santa a few years back who pegged me perfectly) and wondering when the gently caress we're going to get a solid release of it. I never expected something like this. That and The Man Who Fell to Earth (and Bottle Rocket and The 400 Blows and ... ) are going to be at the top of my list when I finally scrounge up enough to get that PS3. I'm so loving excited.

I've seen comparably few Criterions, but my least favorite is by far Au Hasard Balthazar. I recognize why it's considered meaningful, but I just despise it.

I Am Awful posted:

Compared to all of the other Bunuel's I've seen, it requires no deeper thought or interpretation. The metaphor and message is heavy handed and belabored. I didn't buy the characters, which is disappointing since Bunuel usually does a great job of turning caricatures into believable people. It also felt glacially slow, and unfunny for the most part.

Exterminating Angel, Obscure Object, Discreet Charm, Diary of a Chambermaid... all great movies that I enjoyed a lot. Viridiana just left me feeling pissy.

I won't say Viridiana doesn't contain layers of meaning beneath its surface, but what is stated and immediately obvious needs to be heavy-handed in order to combat the domineering force (the church) that it is hoping to discredit. If Bunuel had hidden any more pejoratives behind metaphor, Viridiana would have been far less effective.
