Stolen from the OSHA thread. Nothing super dangerous, just machining a crankshaft with pretty old school and sketchy tools

Smarter Every Day - the science of tractor pulling

The first Smarter video I had to use subtitles and even they were often wrong lol.

Really cool though, I've seen tractor pulls on like TV occasionally years ago and figured out the whole thing was about the sled somehow but never understood what exactly is going on, because they never explained it. After the explanation I thought pretty much everyone would just get stuck the moment the sled dropped completely which happens at the exact same distance thanks to the gearing. I couldn't find the results (easily) from that specific event but the top 5 at some random pull I found were in fact pretty close. Hmm.

I wonder also if it'd be possible to set up some traction control system that would optimize the performance, of if it's forbidden in the rules. Seems like it should be pretty trivial to use like an accelerometer to measure the angle and module the throttle to maintain the optimal position, for example.

Matt is great. Sometimes your dreams are dumb. Make new, better mistakes. Yes.

Technology connections on the "sealed beam" headlights. I've heard of them but as a non-american it was always confusing how you'd just have exactly one possible headlight like it was the soviet union or something. Now I now, and it actually made more sense than I thought.

Speaking of which, he uses several clips of a Gaz-21 Volga for some reason. I've never looked into it but it'd be interesting if it actually uses a similar headlight since it was heavily "inspired" by American cars.

I still have a weird time thinking of NBs as old, since a '99 was the first car I took out a loan to buy, and if the dealer hadn't been total assholes I might've traded it on a new unsold '04 MSM just like the one in the video, in '06.

Ooff size: huge. The NB2 was my first car I bought with my own cash money and while it was used, but younger than the average car on the road. It now stands out significantly from the crowd of giant shiny SUVs as being one of the oldest cars around unless I go to a poorer area :v: Still, at least another 10 years before it's eligible for historical car plates.

Guy buys a totaled GT3 for about $160k and tries to DIY the repairs. In the 3rd video they're just starting to address the actual structural damage.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aluFVHFjp2U

I was thinking about doing something similar, just with a Cayman or a more pedestrian 911. You can get a nice unscratched one and then worry about driving and polishing it, or something that's already been wrecked or had an engine blow up or something and just send it.

Curious how it works out for a GT3. It's one thing to cobble together a Cayman for like $15k and drive it into the ground, it's another to get wrecked GT3 for ten times as much and then be stuck with a six-figure car that a prospective buyer will want to examine under a microscope before buying.

The style seems reasonably inoffensive, but that's obviously suggestive. As for not knowing what he's doing...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-JKqh68-UNQ&t=935s

so seems a realistic preview of what would happen if I tried it :v:

E: watched through the rest of the Cayman series because, as I mentioned, I was thinking of doing something similar. The total cost including the 18k car was ~45k gbp. It does include some dumb upgrades like CF and the wing. Still there are a bunch of Caymans below 50k which haven't been hacked together by an amateur that I'd rather get instead. And of course this cost doesn't include the garage space or the time which had to be a lot, so I don't think that's exactly the path to success.

E2: Lol the Murcielago lifehack of ordering Ferrari valve shims to save money. Same for the head bolt tool.

One downside with his channel is that the audience seems almost entirely non-technical and the comments just jerk him off for being inspirational and what not vs something like robot cantina where everyone is nerding out with suggestions like

quote:

I would suggest advancing your injection timing. EGT is based on how much fuel is still burning as it leaves the cylinder (wasted). So maybe advance the injection, and ESPECIALLY copy the work of SPEED OF AIR when they dimpled the pistons. Their patent says it strengthens the boundary layer on the piston, and improves flame front travel throughout the air/ fuel mix.

This popped up in my recommendations and I skipped to the highlight pretty quickly :v: I've seen some donut videos before and some of them are a bit less anoying than others.

I was curious why they didn't just repeat the "horse lifts a weight through a pulley" experiment, I thought I migh'tve missed an explanation but it seems they immediately jumped to their ultimate solution. So it's more like "how to dyno a horse" than "how much horsepower is a horse"

Here's a good overview of the "Liquid Piston" "inverted wankel" engine that seems to pop up every year or so. I've looked into it before and have been cautiously optimistic but he points out something I missed - they're using a sealed ball bearing on the crankshaft because there's no other way to do it. Seems like it's going to be pretty limiting.

Really cool how things that just massively improve handling pop up from time to time. Probably not practical for normal cars for the near future but maybe some nutjob like Wesley Kagan would cobble it together for one of his projects.
