The more I hear about that car the more it annoys me. I frankly doubt they have any plans to put anything even remotely resembling it into production. Yes, it's built with mostly off the shelf Volvo parts, but from what I've read a lot of them have extra machining work done on them. Also it's somewhere in the area of $300k to have them make one for you. Admittedly my opinion doesn't matter much as the closest I'll be getting to an S60 polestar is my 6 year old S60R which I bought 3 months ago, but it's disappointing. I realize it's hardly their wheelhouse, and this Polestar partnership, while promising, has so far only resulted in a different engine map and a trim package. Volvo makes safe, fairly reliable, very comfortable, well equipped cars and while the S60R is far from the greatest sports sedan it's a very nice sports sedan to live with. Something newer and a bit sportier which retains that good all around package and replaces the haldex with a proper all wheel drive system would be very welcome. It's a pity Volvo hasn't shown much interest thus far in making such a thing, even if their racing partner has.

They're all about refining the way they do things rather than taking big risks. Koenigsegg and Pagani seem like they look at something say "If we used a material which costs 3x as much and is twice as difficult to work with we could shave 1/5th the weight off of this and increase the torsional stiffness by 10NM... Lets do it!". Which I guess you can get away with when your customers don't seem to care how much they spend as long as they get the most insane vehicle out there. I guess when you've basically got a waiting list for every car you make it tends to inspire confidence.

Yeah I see nothing wrong with lane splitting at lights but people who do it on the highway at 80 mph are loving idiots who deserve whatever they get. At least 1/4 of the accidents in that motorcycle crash video were caused by people lane splitting at inappropriate speeds and being unable to stop when a car pulls a normal turn.

I have no illusions regarding my ability to handle a car with 1200 hp and 1970's steering. Those sleeper trucks are awesome, but I think the Volvo is my favorite.

As a quality manager that video is like something out of a nightmare. So many tasks that should be automated being done by hand, so many chances for someone to screw up, so many body parts so close to being laminated onto a piece of sheet metal. I could forgive the horrible planning, some people just aren't good at that sort of thing, but why the hell doesn't he at least turn his wheel to full lock before he starts moving? I can't stand it when I see people trying to get out of a tight space and wasting their time because they always start moving before they have the wheel turned all the way. That said, he does actually seem to know the bounds of his car pretty good, it doesn't look like he actually hits anything and he's not leaving huge space between him and the other cars either. For content, this isn't automotive, but I found it in the related videos and it's amazing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mXI4WWhPn-U The original video for those who haven't seen it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cNZPRsrwumQ Disgruntled Bovine fucked around with this message at 14:14 on Oct 14, 2013 |

Number_6 posted:Like user Seat Safety Switch posted, it was always drilled into me by my father that you never ever ever ever turn the wheels until the car is rolling a little bit, to keep from blowing up the power steering. This lesson was reinforced by the fact that my family's lovely cars made horrible screeching noises, and would often stall, if you put too much strain on the power steering at low speeds. As the driver of a Volvo with a transversely mounted engine and very wide tires, if I didn't turn my wheel to full lock while stationary I could never under any circumstances get out of most parking spaces. I love my car but the turning radius is 21.3 feet. No one has ever told me not to turn the wheels while the car is stationary, but that does make sense. Edit: Content! http://www.liveleak.com/view?f=b641fe46b65e Here's a tip, when you're running from the cops don't run into the side of a train. If you absolutely must run into the side of a train though, make sure there's another train coming on the near track to push your car so you can be sure to get away from the cops. That's how that works, right? Disgruntled Bovine fucked around with this message at 22:18 on Oct 15, 2013 |

I don't know if this is true, but with how over-engineered they are, and the way build the dual-fuel systems to run mostly on pump gas, I imagine that a car with an NRE engine is one you might actually be able to live with every day. Until it killed you, that is. That's a hell of a thing for a 2000 hp drag car.

I'd love to do something like that, but unfortunately railroads in this area have rather too many road crossings and the like to worry about, especially since some of them have been paved over. Add to that all of the abandoned lines that have been turned into bike paths, and you haven't got a whole lot of good options for this sort of thing.
