This CTS-V launches hard enough to think that it's been in an accident.

On cars that cant really get much pace going, it's kinda overkill with the very low chance it will actually be needed.

I don't think it's as much to do with the speed of the accident as it is with the frequency of the accidents. LeMons isn't full of people who don't know how to drive - it's full of people who think they know how to drive but don't.

Which is way worse.

Was there anything left of him after that? Nasty nasty nasty.

Wikipedia says this:

quote:

In his book, "Rapid Response", Dr Steve Olvey, Indycar Medical Director between 1979 and 2003, made the following comments about the incident:

"During an attempt to qualify for the Indy 500, Gordon Smiley, a cocky young driver from Texas, was determined to break 200 mph or die trying. Several veteran drivers...had warned him that he was in way over his head, driving all wrong for the Speedway. Smiley was a road racer and was used to counter-steering his car to avoid a crash if the rear wheels broke traction.

While rushing to the car, I noticed small splotches of a peculiar gray substance marking a trail on the asphalt leading up to the driver. When I reached the car, I was shocked to see that Smiley's helmet was gone, along with the top of his skull. He had essentially been scalped by the debris fence. The material on the race track was most of his brain. His helmet, due to massive centrifugal force, was literally pulled from his head on impact...I rode to the care center with the body. On the way in I performed a cursory examination and realized that nearly every bone in his body was shattered. He had a gaping wound in his side that looked as if he had been attacked by a large shark. I had never seen such trauma." (Rapid Response, pp 98-99).

What the hell were they still doing racing in that snow/sleet/whatever towards the end? It was just a cavalcade of F1 cars sliding into each other and off the track.

The '07 European GP was hilarious. They red-flagged it shortly after a lot of those cars found their way into the gravel trap.

Enjoyable video, well-edited and it did have some interesting shots. Any idea what it was shot with? I'm going to take a wild guess and say an EOS 5D MkII because that seems to be everybody's go-to camera for (relatively) inexpensive high-quality HD stuff but obviously Vimeo isn't the greatest venue on which to judge that.

I could almost kind of see it in socal only because the carpool lanes have double yellows separating them from the regular traffic lanes (which as far as I can tell violates what the DMV/caltrans says about lane marker colors) but yeah she must have been pretty hammered.

Yeah at this point it looks like the cop is the one going the wrong way, though maybe it's because we thankfully don't carpool lanes here.

I'd like to see if her lawyer is going to use this as a defense.

Yeah but those lines are white, which indicates that it is a lane separator from another lane that is going in the same direction. That would be a hell of a desperate attempt from the lawyer, but might as well I guess! :v:

I'm no MechE, so correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't coil bind happen when contact is made between consecutive coils? Even at its most compressed, there seems like like at least one wire diameter between coils.

You're right about what coil bind is, and I still think it's close to getting there:

I think it's the funky lighting but the way it oscillates so much faster when it's fully compressed tells me that it's close.
