Coffee Jones posted:Of course that's a minor sin compared to taking blind corners at 120MPH with oncoming traffic on a narrow two lane public road. I hate to say it but I have been and still am guilty of this (albeit at slower speeds), although I always do it in places that rarely have anyone on them and never leave my lane. Matter of fact, I recorded a slower short run once just to see how well a camera mounted on a tripod in the car (without actually being mounted to anything) would work: cut-out link Turns out it works, although a little shakey. My biggest problem ended up being the head of the tripod swerving on really tight turns and I couldn't tighten it enough by hand. As I said though, this is extremely stupid. I only averaged about 50mph and hit a maximum of about 65 in my video, and I've gone faster on that same road on different runs, but that is still far faster than is safe for that road or any mountain road. That said, while you take your life in your hands whenever you do something like that, you shouldn't feel bad if you hurt someone who is oncoming in your lane, as I've never seen a 2-lane mountain road that didn't have signs every ten feet about no passing. Ever. Passing when you shouldn't is a pet peeve of mine along with not using your blinker. Edit: I removed the url simply because I don't want anyone to think I'm proud of it, which I'm not. I just like the twisties too much for my own good Second Edit: Reading the comments left by that guy, apparently he was using km/h instead of mph so he was actually averaging about 50mph the whole time. Seemed faster than that, but apparently not. The King of Swag fucked around with this message at 13:14 on Jan 5, 2007 |

Oldsmobile posted:Did you drive on the same road, it kinda looked like it? No, the road I posted in my link (before I removed it) is near my house. It's actually one of the larger roads as it leads clear through the mountains (the ridge narrows through there for some reason, making it easier to put a road through); it ends up branching off to increasingly smaller and crazier mountain back-roads. I actually live right at the bottom of where two different mountain ranges smack into each other, just north of a third mountain range, and just west of several more mountain ranges (I live in the SoCal San Fernando valley, I'm surrounded by the San Gabriel's, Santa Monica's and many other large mountain ranges). This leads to what is an essentially unlimited supply of twisty mountain roads and fire-road off-roading fun, which doesn't help me kick the habit of racing through them.

He's lucky he didn't try that in a CJ or anything older though, or he'd have rolled hammering the gas, let alone getting the chance to DORIFTUUUUU it. (seriously, with a monster V8 and a tiny wheel-base, those things would flip if you hammered them too hard)

Holy crap, how could you possibly be that bad at driving yet still be an auto enthusiast? I understand that it was wet out (it looked wet), but come on, that's ridiculous.

Pigpen posted:A new unofficial UK speed record: 176MPH http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=olmNWqV86fI , the previous record having been 172MPH by a man in a Porsche currently awaiting sentencing for the crime. I remember them talking about on TopGear that Hammond in the rocket car (before the crash), could very well set the UK land-speed record. My question though is how is that possible? Do you people not have top-fuel dragsters over there? They hit 350+mph in a quarter-mile.

jamal posted:Wow you sure must watch a lot of top fuel events. The ~320 or so they hit, while very fast, is a little different than 350+ Actually I do watch Top-Fuel dragsters whenever I can (which is about twice a year), and it appears I did overshoot it by a bit. This is what NHRA.com has to say on the matter: Top Fuel Dragsters: The fastest-accelerating vehicles in the world, these are the most recognizable of all drag race cars. The 25-foot-long landlocked missiles can cover the quarter-mile in 4.4 seconds at speeds faster than 335 mph. The engine of choice is an aluminum version of the famous Chrysler Hemi. The supercharged, fuel-injected nitromethane-burning engines produce an estimated 7,000 horsepower.

Search has been eliminated within threads so I don't know if this has been posted yet, but I didn't see it earlier: A monster truck comes down so hard on the concrete floor, it cracks it and splits a refrigerant line running underneath the floor, which comes spraying out. Simkin posted:As fast and as fancy as that is, I'm still kind of disappointed that they didn't somehow manage to pull a fast one on management and sneak a straight six into production. If only for the noise Most straight sixes, unlike other engines, don't really have a identifying sound, instead, there is just one characteristic that you can class them together in; despite sounding relatively smooth, you would swear Satan himself is in there trying to escape. The beauty behind an inline 6 is that with a little work, any one can sound great. For example, this crazy twin-turbo E34 engine: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DcosgFH5Fd4&feature=related But here's one you wouldn't expect; here's a Jeep 4.6L Stroker (a 4.0L I6 with 4.2L I6 rods and crank).
