Recently I finished The Stars My Destination by Alfred Bester. While this book dates from the '50s, I feel it still stands as one of the best sci-fi books I've ever read.

The book left me walking around in a daze for the better part of a week after finishing it. The writing style and innovative subject matter are wonderful, but the true power of the book is the raw drive and focus of its main character, Gully Foyle. It's certainly one of my all-time favourite mood pieces and my first choice for lending to friends who love sci-fi.
