I swapped out the pickups for some GFS classic 57s or something and it's the shizzle - part Les Paul, part ES-135. I'm loving it.

It does the same thing that the modern Gibson Attenuators/THD Hot Plates, but since it's vintage and nobody knows about them anymore, they're something like 1/3rd the price AND, unlike the modern attenuators which have a set impedance level, the Power Soak has a selectable impedance level. They were designed by the lead guitarist from Boston... an MIT masters graduate.

They go anywhere from $100-$200 on eBay, but you can find them on mom-n-pop guitar shop websites for under $100.

I plan on buying one this week. :)

Not to be Debbie Downer - but isn't this the thing that can seriously mess up your amp, if you dial in the wrong numbers?

I had a Bluesbreaker reissue with the Hotplate and it was magic. I ran the living hell out of that rig for years with no problems until I stupidly sold them both years ago.

The nice thing about the Hotplate is that it only comes in one impedance; 8-ohm, 16-ohm and so on. You can't adjust it. The reason this is good is that your 4-year-old won't be able to twist the chickenhead knob around on your MASS so that it looks like it's set at the correct 8 ohms, when it in fact is set at 2 ohms....thereby causing you to COMPLETELY loving DESTROY YOUR BELOVED SUPER loving EXPENSIVE KENDRICK AMP while running it wide open during a session....

Sadly, an amp died, I had to sell it to buy a new amp for an upcoming gig.

Five years later, I traded a friend the amp for a Les Paul Studio.

And then some years later, I traded that Les Paul Studio for a Telecaster.

Two years ago, I traded a guy the Telecaster + cash for a Les Paul Traditional.

Today, I traded a guy, my Les Paul Trad for an exact copy of the original guitar, the ES-135. To offset the $ diff, he also threw in a Les Paul Studio, that is an exact copy of the Studio I had.
