Is the performance/bass extension difference between 5" monitors and 6" monitors worth the premium in cost and size? I'm looking at the new versions of everyone's favorite budget JBLs (305p/306p), and while I'd love to have a pair of 8" monitors I don't have the space in my current home. I don't plan on staying in this place for more than another year or two, and I'll probably get a set of 8" speakers eventually. I mainly want to play synthesizers through them so I care about bass extension, but saving $100 and some desk space is valuable too.

Why is Rec Out set to “Tape Copy 1->2?” Was it set that way when plugged into the focusrite? Wouldn’t that be treating Tape 1 as an input on that loop (a feature on some high end Yamahas designed for copying tapes while listening to whatever you wanted) and not the turntable?

So really, there is no reason to do what I am doing and I should just use the receiver for something else like hooking up a turntable to speakers somewhere else in the house. It’s a very nice receiver so definitely do that if you’re not gonna record with it. Don’t just junk it.

Probably way easier for your needs if FCP is too daunting. The truth is that most YouTubers with at least decent audio and video are either recording their audio separately into their computers/recorders and combining them with camera footage or they’ve got good mics and good webcams going into their computers/good mics into their phones or whatever and recording like that. I have no clue if you can use the H4 as a phone mic but maybe it’s worth picking up a decent cheap phone mic instead or using the H4 as a USB computer mic and picking up a decent HD or 4K webcam for $20-$200.

Tbh, when I said “record on your phone” I literally just meant “use the built in mic or maybe the inline mic that comes with your headphones to record and see how you like it. It won’t be stereo or particularly high fidelity but, at least for my purposes, it gets me to where I need for like 90% of my current sampling uses. I also tend to process the poo poo out of my samples and layer effects on them anyway though, so YMMV.

Ableton+Push was a much more complete package in terms of what you could do than Maschine. They pulled in a lot of people who’d bought and then sold Maschine Mk1’s.

One of my mixer's stereo in channels has both L/R RCA and L/R 1/4 inch TS jacks. I want to buy a cable to easily connect my iPad/computer/phone/any other consumer product with a 3.5mm stereo line output. Should I buy a 3.5mm-to-RCA cable or 3.5mm-to-2x 1/4"? Is one going to give me noticeably better performance? They're both priced the same.

Cool cool. Last question, for now: My mixer has two channels with switchable Mic/Hi-Z/Instrument Ins. Do I need a DI box/am I better off noise-wise getting a DI box or am I fine plugging bass/guitar straight into the mixer (with the appropriate setting)? This would be to use with software amp sims.

I just got a pair of the JBL 305P Mk2 (the fancy special edition amazon exclusive ones with the colorful screen print) and I really really like them. Would recommend any variant of them, and if you like the look of the screen printed ones the quality of the print and general fit/finish are excellent. I understand that they’re a bit colored for a lot of people and if you can afford to spend more you probably should, but they fit my needs and budget marvelously.

I have a soundcraft usb interface/mixer that lacks a power switch, as well as two 305 mk2s with power switches on their backs. Can I switch all three on/off at the power strip or do I have to switch everything individually? Right now the soundcraft is plugged into a powerstrip that gets switched off since I’m not physically unplugging that thing to power it off.

Is there any "default" or included effect in a modern DAW (let's say Ableton, for the sake of this question) for which the general consensus is that it's irredeemable garbage and needs immediate replacement with a plugin or outboard effect? Or have we reached commodity status on included effects in DAWs? I guess what I'm asking is--once you've plunked down the money for a 'lite' version of Ableton--or even better, gone ahead and bought a standard or complete license--do you really *need* to shop around for (basic, "bread and butter") VSTs/AUs? Is there a price point where that starts to be noticeable? Like "no for stuff under $10 but yes for stuff that's over $60"? And for that matter, is a free/shareware/cheap plugin going to be notably better than something that shipped in your DAW? Let's assume that I'm not talking about plugins that have unique or bespoke functions/features. Like, if there's a tape delay that ships in Ableton is it dumb to download free/cheap tape delay plugins?

One of my favorite little details of Radiohead's "Motion Picture Soundtrack" is that you can clearly hear the harmonium bellows pumping out of sync with the tempo of the song. The dark counterpoint to that would be every acoustic recording made to sound “earthy” or “roots-y” that leans hard into the sounds of the player sloppily sliding their fingers all over the strings.

Would like to stay under $700 if possible. How much can you stretch your budget? $300-$400- 2020 MacBook Air Quad Core. Not what you want financially but this computer will probably last you the better part of a decade. $100-$200- 2018/2019 MacBook Air Dual Core, especially an official refurb or very well-maintained used machine if you want to save or maximize dollar value. The butterfly keyboard is the worst but you get a free three year program with it. I think it’s probs worth the tradeoff for the better CPU and retina screen. $0- pre-2018 MacBook Air, ideally a 2017, look for official Apple refurbs. These can be had for like &500-$700 last I checked. They’re bulletproof as hell and plenty fast but also really outdated in many ways. No Retina display, no quad core. On the plus side, you get an SD slot, USB 3 A-style ports, and the best keyboard Apple ever put in a laptop (aside from the 2012-2015 MacBook Pro, which is the same keyboard with slightly deeper travel). Probably one of the best laptops ever produced, still really excellent to use (LTT recently did a whole video about why it was still the best selling laptop, period, in like January) but the new ones are better and way more future proof.

MacBook Air is the standard by which literally all other $1000-or-less laptops are held and MacOS is totally fine with VST. Honestly, music making is like the one area where MacOS is arguably the first class citizen guaranteed to work mostly out-of-the-box with whatever compared to Windows. If you’re looking at the budget end you’re going to have a much bigger pool of Mac users to troubleshoot from than people using x-low-tier Lenovo. Probably not an issue, but the Air is the benchmark for a reason. Alternatively I guess I can recommend a Microsoft Surface product. I just don’t dig the <$1000 PC laptop space at all. And above the Air/Surface Pro/Surface Laptop you get into Dell XPS/Macbook Pro territory.

Should I be recording at 96kHz+ (192kHz?) or is 44.1/48kHz good? I recently found out that the multitrack USB chip in my mixer only tops out at 44.1/48 24-bit (Soundcraft Signature 12 MTK), while the cheaper version that comes with 2-channel USB can go all the way up to 192kHz. I generally usually record one thing at a time or the master channels, and I'm wondering if I should go with a different recording solution than my DAW straight from the mixer.

Have you opened it up and looked at the jack? If it’s physical damage it should be visible/tinkerable. Like if there’s damage to the plug or its surrounding connections you should be able to find it and jiggle around some loose solder or whatever. Have you looked at the cable? The damage might be there and not in the interface itself. I’ve had bad luck borking USB-B connectors with too much sharp bending at the seam between the connector and the cable.

Word of warning- I bought the student version of Ableton 9 several years ago (back in like 2014/2015) and I wasn’t able to simply upgrade it to V 10. Random curiosity question: say you aspire to one day own a reel-to-reel, because you’re stupid, and one day you browse craigslist as one does. You see three machines on offer for roughly the same price: one is stereo/2 track, one is 4 track, and one is 18-track. All three are the same manufacturer (let’s say Fostex or Tascam) and age, and all three have recent maintenance work and are in good shape. Assuming that the tape size is the same, is the available recording quality going to be commensurately better/worse inverse to the number of tracks (ie, is a 2 track machine going to give you much better recording quality than an 18 or 24 track)? If you’re going to buy one, is it better to just get a high quality (within budget) stereo machine than something multitrack? Is there a sweet spot (4/8/etc vs 2)? In 2021, you wouldn’t be bothering with recording multitrack to tape (I certainly wouldn’t be). But downmixing or mastering/“mastering” to tape, or recording one-off tracks/doing experiments with one or two channels seems much more realistic.
