I finally got around to installing Plex server to try with my new Roku3... the last time my Boxee Box froze up and had to be reset I said fuckit and drove to Best Buy to get a Roku.

Happy to say Plex streaming over wired connection works incredibly well at 720p. I'll try 1080p soon but most of my content is in 720p. It starts playing faster than buffering a netflix video. The Plex interface isn't anything incredible, but it does get the job done.

Grab Rarflix; it's a somewhat improved version of the vanilla Plex for Roku. Nothing earth shattering but a bit nicer.

If you have a box to transcode, Plex/Roku owns bones.

Skipping a bunch of very informative posts I bet but..... since I can't take the time to go back and read all 216 pages just wanted to get the pros opinions on what I got laying around to turn into a machine....

Athlon 64X2 +6000 (Windsor)
Radeon HD4600 Series (HDMI)
3.5gb RAM (Shows up as 3.5, but it's 4gb)

It's on an install of Windows XP that I have the key for.

Wipe this baby clean, throw it in a sleek case and i'm good to go?

It'll work, but honestly it's going to be hot, loud, and probably run worse than a $200 Bay Trail NUC/2G Ram/Openelec setup.

Unless the user experience is amazing I can't see it beating out the new $50 Roku stick that supports all the same services.

It's running Android, which means it's going to have a way more flexible gui than Roku, so the UI could be much better. Plex's will be at least. That also means much more extensibility.

They still make 10/100 poo poo?? Why in the world would this not have gigabit ethernet?

Because what the hell are you going to be doing with a FireTV that requires gigabit Ethernet?

I am going to be putting together a HTPC in the next few months. It would be nice if a prebuilt box already exists that does what I want. The FireTV looks promising some time in the future. Here are the requirements:

Primary:
- Play 1080p content from either built in drive or USB drive.
- Connect to Usenet via sickbeard/sabnzbd. Control via NZB360 on phone/tablet.
- Function as a Flex server so I can watch content on tablet
- SFTP into it to access files from phone/tablet/etc
- Minimal wires/cables/etc
- Netflix/Amazon Prime/ etc
- Intuitive interface my wife can use
- Be on 24/7 so minimal power draw, not a fire hazard, etc.

Secondary:
- Play emulators
- Access steam library and play low impact games (max: maybe Civ 5)
- Can be upgraded/repaired

It looks like XBMC can handle a lot of this, but after reading about it, I am uncertain. What would be the cost range of such a device?

Short version is you're not going to get all of your primary wants, much less secondary, on one box.

If you want friendly interface, minimal wires, and Netflix/Amazon, you need a media box. There is no HTPC solution that handles local and online streaming in a clean, easy-to-use interface. The transcoding/usenet is PC-only, of course.

Given what you want, you should be looking at a Roku/FireTV Frontend + Plex/File Server backend.

This has done 4 1080p transcodes at once, it's not even in the same class.

Who gives a gently caress? Not everybody wants to waste their time trying to fix arcane problems with a box that plays back their sitcoms and porn. An Openelec install on a low-end box is cheap, simple, and does what most people want.

Plex, a million times Plex. It's incredibly simple to setup (compared to anything else), and there are clients for drat near every device - Roku, PC, Web broser, mobile OSs, the Fire, some bluray players and TVs. Takes care of library management automatically too.
