So take this as a lesson, currently there is no way to receive HD from a satellite/cable box unless you purchase and entirely new HTPC system with and ATI Wonder TV Tuner with CableCARD technology. CableCARD and ATI's sweet little gig aren't available OEM, only bundled with certified poo poo.

Actually, a lot of cable boxes have firewire ports which you can record off (and even control them over the firewire connection). Also you can get QAM tuners for your PC which will let you record unencrypted HD on cable networks (ie, all the broadcast HD in your area assuming your cable operator carries it)- but you won't be able to record any premium channels without a CableCARD capable QAM tuner like ATI's.
