Anyone know how to get multiple X servers working? Whenever I try startx -- :1 it works on Alt-Ctl-F8 but when I switch elsewhere and back I just see the startup log.

Has anyone tried Linux from Scratch or is Slackware the preferred method of getting a bit deeper into Linux? They both seem to have good books.

Almost all commercial DVDs are encrypted.

k9copy and xdvdshrink can backup movie DVDs, if that's what you want, though I have not used either.

My SSD is dying; it stops functioning and disappears after a few minutes. I'm trying to recover the disk image using dd/dcfldd but it always stops part of the way through. Is this a suitable job for rsync? I'm thinking I could run rsync -avcu --inplace --progress and come back to that after each fail. The source drive is ntfs, if that matters.

Maybe try ddrescue? http://www.gnu.org/s/ddrescue/ddrescue.html
Works until the drive fails and I have to unplug/replug it to recognize the drive. And ddrescue doesn't have a resume function, as far as I'm aware.

I should have rtfm before saying it couldn't resume, it's right in there. Also I had the wrong ddrescue installed since there is some other poo poo called dd_rescue. Trying with a logfile now.

I can rule out the power cord or anything like that as it has been transplanted to a different machine.
