roffles posted:Is there any real use for a 7.1 system right now? I have a 7.1 receiver and 2 spare surround speakers that I never wired up since it would be a pain to run the wiring and mount them. Well, all xbox 360 games are 5.1, as well as most dvd movies (with a few exceptions that support 6.1). However, if your listening room is on the larger side, the two additional rear speakers could help to provide a more even soundstage behind you by distributing the sound allocated to the rear channels to four speakers, instead of the two. HD-DVD movies however, with Dolby TrueHD sound support 7.1 sound, so those extra speakers'll come in handy there. edit: sorry, forgot the hd in a moment of passing retardation. Hahaha, I didn't read the specs when I first saw that link, but now that I did it's loving hilarious. Yeah, what Boner said, it's utter bullshit. However, there are relatively affordable subs that go down to 20hz, such as the BK XLS200 which is a very decent subwoofer for both music and moderate level movie watching. http://www.bkelec.com/HiFi/Sub_Woofers/XLS200-DFandFF.htm
