Nice first post.

I cannot personally tell the difference between full CD's and ripped mp3s, but I do not listen to much music.
I choose compression and bitrates depending on what I am going to use it for. For example, to back up CD's you would use a relatively high bitrate, but to listen on an mp3 player while you are out jogging or something you can use lower.

Another big factor for me is the resulting filesize. Since I do not have much music, I can afford to keep high bitrates, but if I wanted to have 10,000 songs on my hard drive, I'd keep it lower.

Another is the type of music, as stated above, something with cybols needs a nice, high bitrate, while a badly recorded podcast doesn't.
