So it's time to get my sister a first car, and she and my mom have found a 2008 Dodge Caliber with ~18k on the clock for $10,000. They're all gung-ho about it despite my warnings against econo-Dodges, but the drat things aren't old enough yet for me to point out any obvious deal killers. I've pointed out a nice Honda would cost less and surely be more reliable, but my Mom is unfortunately one of those :911: AMERICAN CARS 12-07-1941 NEVAR FORGET :911: people.

They're not good cars. Also, a used one for $10k is a terrible deal, and you'd be much better served spending $10k on something else. If your mom insists on an American car, how bout a nice Mexican built Focus?

This thread might answer your question better:

I don't know if you noticed, but the last couple questions to be asked in here didn't get answered.

I just totaled my car and know nothing about junkyards or selling a busted used car and I know you guys probably have a ton of good advice on how to handle this. Should I make a thread or could you append some information to this sticky?

If your car is insured and the insurance company's adjuster deems it totalled, you have two options: take the payout from your insurance, or buy back the wreck from them. If you do not like the payout price they give you, you can (with great effort) negotiate with them for a fairer price. To do this, you'll have to put up with indifferent or downright hostile customer service, whose best interest is to pay you as little as possible. If you have say a 2003 VW GTI, and the company wants to pay you 8,000 for it, you can submit a survey of comparable GTIs for sale in the area, where the average selling price might be 13,000, just to demonstrate that you could never buy an adequate replacement for their payout.
e: more on the buyback procedure: http://www.carinsurance.com/kb/content35255.aspx

If you are not insured, you'll have to sell the car yourself to a junkyard, usually for very little, like $100-$300. Some places will tow it away for free and that's it. Call up your local junkyards and find out what they do. If your car has any enthusiast community, and you have sufficient patience, you can keep the car and sell the parts in an attempt to gain more money that way. Somebody might pay several hundred for an intact engine, for example. It is possible, depending on what was damaged, that you might be able to sell it wholesale to someone who is willing to fix the whole car.

A good guide to buying a used car:

I look at it every so often so I might as well store it here.

If you need extra mounting 'velcro' type things for your EZPass/Fastlane transponder, this is a convenient place to get them.

A nice list of interference engines with timing belts:

That page in particular is not that great, even by its own admission:
"But sometimes, perception doesn’t equal reality. In many cases, consumers’ view does not accurately reflect the automaker’s recent track record. Clearly, it is well worth researching factors such as depreciation, reliability, safety test results, and test performance before making a purchase to ensure that you buy the best vehicle for your needs and budget."

This is hard to find, in part because the site's main page links back to the SCCA site. And it just doesn't index highly on Google for some reason.

It's a breakdown of the SCCA Solo II (autocross) classes. Mostly for reference, as new cars aren't being added into it.

Any advice for finding a non-lovely used car dealership? (bonus points if it's in LA!)

Medical / student loan stuff has put my credit in a place where reputable places like Carmax and the like probably won't even talk to me.

You're gonna have to pinch your pennies and look for good quality used cars on Craigslist.

Is there a central large forum for mini Coopers? I assume one of the ones I find on Google is "the good one" but I don't know which. Do we have an ai thread or anything about them?

I'm casually car shopping and curious about the general buzz for those cars.

There are a few guys in the BMW thread that have Minis of various years. You should start there to spare yourself general automotive forums.

Have you done the math on how much you save per month or per year? The Insight isn't a bad car; it just doesn't get amazing highway mileage compared to cheaper gas cars.
