From what I read the E5 is better then the G3 anyways. The sync detector in the G3 is poo poo and with a total redesign of the radio it actually performs worse. If they ever fixed the sync and improved performance then the G3 would be worth the price.

Question on radios. I'd like to upgrade from my E5. I'm looking at the G3 and G6. I was waiting on the G3 but I've been reading a lot of bad reviews. I mainly want to get access to the aircraft bands, and maybe easier SSB tuning, so if there is some shortcoming in some other areas then my trusty E5 can pick up the slack. So I ask you all, which is the better radio?

For the price tag is won't get any better then the E5. The G6 is a decent radio that trades features like the wide/narrow bandwidth switch and audio fidelity for a smaller size and air band. If the air band is really a focus I would highly recommend an inexpensive police scanner over a shortwave with air band. Two reasons are a scanner will perform better and have squelch so there isn't annoying static between transmissions. If sideband is a big deal I don't find any inexpensive portables are really an improvement over another. I have a Sony ICF-2010 which is supposed to be the golden crown of shortwave portables but its sideband is nothing compared to tuning sideband on a modest amateur radio HF transceiver.

I have the Degen 1103 (basically the E5 with horrible interface) and I would say it performs about 85% as well as my much more expensive Sony ICF-2010. From what I've read the G3 and G6 won't perform any better then the E5 you already have. In positive news the latest production of the G3s are a huge improvement over what came out last fall! I'll say go that route but make sure the seriel number of the radio is like 1000+ to make sure it's current (aka fixed from most bugs).

Good luck!

Before the 80's some US shortwave stations tried to have real formats like rock or top-40. At most these attempts lasted a few years before money ran dry (little to no advertising revenue) and they were forced to go brokered to say afloat or sell to religious groups.

The only two US stations that aren't religious based are WBCQ and WRMI though they maintain quite a few religious broadcasts since they pay for the time. Both stations will sell you time if you're willing to pay and they can squeeze you into their schedule. No idea what an hour will cost but I'm thinking in the range of $100-200 an hour but it could be less. These stations are very flexible in how a show gets to them for air. There's this one show on WBCQ called "Goddess Irena" where this kooky woman phones the transmitter and the broadcast is basically her rambling on about new age stuff and playing her own music. Why she does who knows but all WBCQ cares about is she pays for it. So why let all the crazy people buy all the time on shortwave! Reach deep goons and take back the shortwaves! :hist101:

The whole article is pretty interesting.

Wasn't DRM (digital shortwave) being pushed as a potential LPSW service around 26 MHz ? I see the potential, with 100 watts into a antenna the size of a CB whip one could probably get coverage equivalent to a LPFM. The downsides would be the listener needs a new radio and if anyone has ever listened to 27 MHz distant skip can play havoc on even a local signal. Doing this in analog at least takes away the need for digital equipment. I guess Germany doesn't have the same shortwave broadcasting rules as the US ? Here a licensed SW broadcaster has to broadcast at least 50,000 watts. One new station in Milton, FL (hey it's not Tennessee!), WJHR, has somewhat skirted the 50,000 watt rule by broadcasting only in single sideband (15550 USB daytime if you're interested, religious poo poo). Even though PEP "peak envelope power" will be 50,000 watts the average power coming from the station will be more around 12,000 to 15,000 watts. I say why have any silly power rule still ? Seems there would be plenty of shortwave broadcasting in the US if it didn't cost so darn much for a license and the cost to run 50,000 watts!

Australia has a similar LPSW broadcast going on also, a greek ethnic station at the opposite side of the dial (2 MHz) running 1,000 watts to Sydney. Seems there's no shortage of people wanting real radio stations, it's about darn time government organizations like the FCC actually do something for the people and expand the broadcast band! Wait did I say do something for the people ? Nevermind .... :bang:

Never had it on all 4 but 3 is quite common (usually 5,10 and 15 here). My favorite is 5 MHz at night when it's WWV, WWVH, YVTO(Venezuela) and sometimes others. Something very tranqual about 4 or 5 time signals beeping and ticking away at each other for time dominance! 99% of the time WWV wins on the east coast but I do enjoy that rare 1% when UTC takes the backseat.

I'm 1/2 mile from the local airport and in my experience my police scanner trumps my shortwave with airband. But like nmfree said, YMMV. One thing to consider is any radio will probably hear the plane side of the communication. When airplanes are a few miles up in the sky they get helluva range! Ground control is another story where one has to be pretty close, say 10-15 miles, to hear both sides of communication. Some people make a hobby of going to airports with their scanners just to listen to both sides of communication. I won't get into the homeland security angle of that but only hearing one side with no talkback can be confusing. A good test of being able to hear ground control is to try an airport's ATIS (Automatic Terminal Information Service) channel. The AM steps would hurt you though since near everything outside the Americas uses 9 KHz steps as opposed to our 10 KHz step. So instead of 530->540->550->etc. it would be 531->540->549->etc., good if you DX European signals that might hide between American channels but useless for local stations. The only downside, and I should have caught this, is the MW interval. For some reason I thought the 470U was switchable between 9 and 10KHz, but it turns out only the 470US is switchable. My 470U can only do 9 KHz on AM so I'm pretty limited there now. I can tune in most of the real local stations even though they're a few channels off (ex. AM-930 at 927, AM-820 at 819, etc.), but since most AM stations are right-wing yack, I can live without. One thing I noticed when I changed from non-American radio settings to American radio settings is AM sound quality really took a hit, anyone know why ? I know the US caps AM bandwidth at like 10KHz(5KHz really), does Europe have much better sounding AM radio !? If anything I would believe it to be worse since they have smaller channel steps (9 vs 10KHz) to work with. How is C-Crane radios in general?

Looking at this model http://www.ccrane.com/radios/shortwave-radios/ccradio-swp.aspx Cheap, portable. Are there better models out there? I'm sure of it, however, it might do as a beginners radio. Yea or Nay?

Nay. I don't own the SWPocket or have any real experience with it but it seems steeply priced for its features(like most CCrane products). It doesn't cover ALL shortwave frequencies and it doesn't have single sideband (SSB) which has some cool stuff. For a little bit of extra money ($10 in my link) you can get a better featured radio with the Degen 1103 (see thread OP). I love mine, only downside is the strange interface but the performance makes up for that. One man's opinion.

Damnit, driving home tonight my steering wheel stereo controls crap out! Guess the steering wheel control interface is wonky, another thing to fiddle with on my shortwave car stereo. Probably not too safe cruising around constantly reaching for the center console tapping "tune" to find some rare DX :ohdear:

Haven't DX'ed anything too rare lately, Radio Australia still a regular catch on 9560 KHz in the morning. Yesterday evening I could actually hear Miami's WRMI 9955 thanks to gray-line propagation, the station normally shoots its 50,000 watts entirely over the Caribbean/South America so a hard catch here in Maryland. Also I've been checking out Radio Havana Cuba's new 5040 KHz national service for tourists. Like the Radio Rebelde transmitter on 5025 KHz the antenna, called a NVIS (Near Vertical Incidence Skywave radiating system , also known as a "Cloud Warmer"), shoots the signal straight up intended only for strong nearby reception. Fortunately shortwave doesn't really work like that and 5025 and 5040 carry well beyond. The 5040 services carries like an hour of various languages intended for vacationers. Jokes on them, few foreigners even know what shortwave is ....

Why not? I do it all the time. It only becomes a problem if you can't operate the radio by touch.

NVIS actually is rather local (where local is ~500 miles) most of the time. It isn't line of sight, but during the day, 5040 would not carry far at all, and at night, wouldn't have a great long distance skip chance with an NVIS setup.

I can but I paid money to do it on my steering wheel damnit! Working progress trying to fix it, still haven't quite figured it out.

Listeners in the Florida Keys and South Florida have reported uber strong signals from both 5025 and 5040, like S9+40. Here in central Maryland the stations maybe tap out at S9 during the night. I can still hear 5025 during the day but with around S3 strength. Guess my point was the shortwave signals will carry beyond intended local coverage though not exactly crushing me with signal (Cuba does that with int'l RHC on 6000, 6010, 6060, 6140, and so on :) ).

Friday night I was listening to WBCQ and the owner's program "Allan Weiner Worldwide" was broadcasting on 3 of its 4 transmitters (5110, 7415, 9330; later two were the strongest) around 8 PM EST. I was treated to what sounded like a Glenn Beck-like rant of how socialism/fascism is taking over and Americans are loosing their freedom and this loss is being felt around the world. Huh ? Is this the same Allan who not even 3 years ago said things like "Never Vote Republican" and actually took his station's slogan "Peace, Love and Understanding" seriously !? Maybe if I listened to Brother Stair (which WBCQ carries many hours of) enough I'd loose it too but disappointing since I considered Allan one of the normal broadcasters on the shortwaves. If you read his book about his pirate radio days you'll understand what I mean.

Finally got my steering wheel control working, the remote input on the back of my shortwave Sony car stereo is a little wider then it should be to properly hold the input cable so I did the old duct tape trick. I drove around for 20 minutes and everything finally works as it should. I listened to Holy Quran singing the whole drive on 11820 KHz, pretty good signal from the Middle East this evening.

On the flip side caught this Michigan Militia piece on Google News,

http://www.annarbor.com/vielmetti/michigan-militia-then-and-now/

I'll paste the shortwave part,

quote:

After Koernke's release from jail, he went back online and on the air under the name of Liberty Tree Radio, broadcasting from Dexter. Koernke is back broadcasting on shortwave radio with a show called The Intelligence Report, which runs from 6-7 p.m. on 9.265 kHz.

Checking the frequency it's WINB from Red Lion, Pennsylvania. This station is also the radio home of jailed child molester Tony Alamo which Glenn Hauser points out every DXLD. Classy station.

Add: Anyone been listening to AM 730 "The Wobbler" coming from Cuba ?

People on the Spooks list-serv have been hearing "The Buzzer" (4625) on random nearby frequencies, pretty loud too leading many to question if they are spurs or not! Listen to the clone Buzzers every 42.1 KHz from the main frequency. If all these Buzzers do stop for broadcast your rear end goodbye! :clint:

Regarding the comments on the last few pages about the Grundig G3: Is there any way to know if one I'd pick up at a local Radio Shack is a newer, updated model or just some old dusty one from two years ago they've had sitting around forever? Is there a manufacture date where people know they 'got better' or anything?

Look at the serial number, the higher the better (I think 1000+). The G3 has only been around a year so it can't be any older than that. Ask the store if you can go outside and play with it. Check the sync feature to make sure it will lock and hold onto signals, that's been the big issue. Worst case you buy it and then find it's still crappy you can return it to the store for exchange/refund. If you can wait even Eton(Grundig) will exchange your radio under warranty. Many people did that when Radio Shack had a sale on them for $90, bought the radio and exchanged it through Eton for a current "fixed" radio. It's a good radio if you get a later production model, why Eton had to screw it up when it first came out I don't know. Why alienate an already tiny customer base, shortwave listeners ?
