Here's some condensed shortwave for newbies. It's pirate radio, crazy religious, creepy kids singing, single sideband (so terrible sound quality, more so) and it just appears wherever it drat well feels like it! Not my recording but I am using it for a ringtone now. http://amdxer.com/download/DX_Audio_Clips_Other/6075%20kHz%20AM%20YHWH%2023NO13%200228-0232%20UTC.mp3 http://www.hfunderground.com/wiki/YHWH

QPZIL posted:It's been a long time since I've looked into it (and a lot time since the OP was written), but what is the current best entry-level radio? And is Shortwave still prevalent enough to warrant getting into it? I know that a number of stations have shut down. If that is your price range the PL-600 is a great deal. Also in that range is the Kaito 1103, I've had mine for 5 years now and still works great. It seems if you go much lower in price you lose SSB which is needed for pirate crazies, amateur radio, 2-way comms and morse code/digital stuff. Another investment to make is an antenna, loop antennas are hard to beat if space is an issue. You can make them, cited in the op, or buy one for pretty cheap like this Degen DE13.

De Nomolos posted:So if you were recommending a cheap set for a newcomer with no experience who doesn't want to sink much into an initial set, would you recommend RadioShack's in-house stuff? I use an old inherited Zenith set party for the fun of repairing it, so I'm not up on the recent stuff. I had to look at their website, it's been so long since I stepped foot in a Radio Shack store. Their $20-30 radios are priced similar to places like Amazon or eBay so why not. They are limited frequencies, no SSB and only the real strong signals will make the whip. Still a great way to get your feet wet in shortwave, I have two under $20 radios (one analog, one digital freq counter) and I'll use them to quickly gloss the dials to see what's out there. You don't need much of a setup to bring in religious crazies, Cuba and many foreign language stations.

Looks like the number stations people have found The Buzzer! Not nearly as creepy and guarded as the old site it seems. http://priyom.org/blog/real-buzzer-site-found!.aspx

This is pretty exciting! http://artbell.com/art-bells-new-show-faq/ Q. Will Art be on Shortwave radio? A. In fact yes! We have made a deal with a shortwave station out of Tennessee, WTWW on 5,085 khz, a good frequency to be heard at that time of night. They will carry just the LIVE portion of the show.

They become way too familiar the more you get into the hobby. It'll be a weird day if I ever turn on a shortwave radio and Brother (overcomer) is nowhere to be heard! Then again Peter Peters and Gene Scott have been dead for years and they still haunt the dial

When it comes to shortwave religious nutters this program has to be the most metal https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dcETroAozlo Not my clip, but always weird fun when I stumble upon it.

Europe allows lower powered broadcasting utilizing former state owned facilities; not sure why North America ceases facilities then immediately tears them apart (looking at you Sackville and VOA).

Not 100% shortwave related, but shortwave radio is apart of it! http://www.politico.com/story/2016/12/donald-trump-voice-of-america-232442 Also this hurts, http://swling.com/blog/2016/12/radio-australia-to-end-shortwave-broadcast-service-on-january-31-2017/ Since I live in a noisy townhouse neighborhood now I've been doing most of my shortwave listening on these. http://websdr.org/ http://sdr.hu/ Cheating I know, but only so much shortwaving I can do outside now that winter's hit.

In semi-positive news a new shortwave station coming and it's in the U.S.; downside is it'll be another religious broadcaster .... http://swling.com/blog/2017/03/kimf-a-new-shortwave-broadcasting-station-in-nevada/

Not quite shortwave, but vacationing in the Florida Keys and the Cuban AMs are local signal strength. These are usually stations I hear with low to moderate quality at night in central Maryland. Totally jamming to Cuban easy listening music (AM 530) on the beach with my Grundig G5.
