I think everything about berserk is meant to be gratuitous, and even though my memory is vague about it all, I do remember thinking that it almost descends into a kind of torture porn in places. Aside from that thought, I'd have to reread it to be more specific. (Except for the Eclipse, which is etched into my memory as a distinct "DO NOT WANT.")

I think that's why Griffith's rebirth as the demon prince is so significant. His sacrifices were loyal until the end and willingly walked into their demise. He had made sacrifices on the battle field regularly, he was already a demon. People ripped up their wild card to serve him. I disagree with your assessment, but am too tired to do anything about it.

The seasonal thread could help out with currently running ones, the chat thread for others ... hell, you could probably ask anywhere. The best animation I've seen in a while was probably Flip Flappers (it's gorgeous), along with the Little Witch Academia OVAs. Currently running, Maid Dragon actually has very good animation and great sound design. Those are a couple recent examples, I'm tired and going to bed. I'm sure others will have more.

I've always taken it as a sign of how the armor -and really, everything that's happened - has changed him. He looks stranger now. Almost like he's less human.

Those bullet points are about the gist of it, but I have to parrot everyone else - the manga is exquisitely drawn, and very compelling. I'm sure you'd like it if you like this anime. It's so well drawn that sometimes the artist will just delay poo poo to get it right. Or to play ... what was it, Love Live? Either way it makes everything super high quality.
