Osmosisch posted:Things I strongly dislike about it: I noticed this a fair bit in the later books, where the narrative would grind to a halt so a character could give a long monologue about how they were right and everyone else was going to shut up and listen to them because they’re at the end of their patience. I remember Snuff being especially bad about it — you could maybe get away with that from someone like Vimes or Granny who has, in some sense, earned our trust, but not from a pissant like Feeney who’s appearing on the page for the first time and hadn’t exactly given the best account of themselves when they were here.

Reading spending character sets is better for rereads imo

What are some of the most egregious examples of a non watch book set in Anhk Moorpork that eventually became a Watch Book? Heard that’s the reason why Pratchett created Moist Von Lippig.

The Truth butted up pretty hard with the Watch I saw new covers for Discworld books at my job yesterday and I can’t say I care for them

The Truth feels anti-Watch in the same way the Moist books are, because the Watch are pretty much antagonists in them. While it's not set in Ankh Morpork, I think Monstrous Regiment most strongly ends up being a Watch book, given how many of them show up in the end as Good Guys/secret saviors throughout the entire story.

Those covers are very generic.

I mean it's those covers or the originals but weirdly zoomed in and blurry, unfortunately. Also some "collectors edition" hardcovers or something that are also generic but hand drawn?

I had a dream last night where I encountered a Discworld book that I had never read before. I know that people talking about their dreams is usually tedious so I'll try to be brief. It was a Guards book set between Men at Arms and Feet of Clay, and it was called "Thought Police" (I know this because it appeared in the list of books in the inside cover). The plot was that Ridcully and Vetinari had made a junior wizard named Pindler join the Watch. He was a junior wizard that flunked out of UU, who would break into mansions to steal artwork to later fence. But he didn't actually use magic to do this, he was just good at it (until he got caught and was forced to join the watch as punishment). His real ability was precognition, which is why he was able to burgle so effectively because he knew what his victims were going to do in advance. Anyway, Vimes was very much against the idea of having any magic in the watch. Carrot wanted to use Pindler for a new division of the watch called the "reporting crime before it happens squad" and Angua made a joke about how a very small minority of people would be reported in this way. Then I woke up.

That's probably an actual Discworld book from a universe just slightly off from ours, yeah

I'd enjoy that plot. Also you can read in a dream? Whenever I try the words don't sit right and I get very frustrated

I never dream about books I've read - sometimes I have dreams about what I imagine a novel I've never read might be like.

I definitely remember reading an Elden Ring wiki in my dreams last night and discovering a talisman that boosted casting speed, and was compatible with the casting speed boosts from three related armor sets, Mittelmach, Mittelmore, and Mittelmain, which is unusually creative naming from my dreaming brain.
