Will you be reading The Last Hero as well? You're a way off it yet, but being quite short it manages to concentrate the humour very well and the illustrations are pretty much spot on for how I'd envision Discworld.

Eric is short enough that I wouldn't bother skipping it; it bridges the end of Sourcery and the start of Interesting Times, plus it reveals the origin of life on the Disc (Rincewind's sandwich).

Did Paul Kidby ever do covers for the earlier books? I'm guessing not, but we can always hope.

I think my first Discworld was the Light Fantastic when I was about 10, or thereabouts. Been 18 years since. :(

It still has some great moments though, like Johnny imagining the alien battleship having a (four-armed reptilian) tealady, because of course it would. Just assume it's trying to be retro.

Also the dwarf bread generally isn't actually eaten and just reminds you of how much you'd rather be eating literally anything else.

Wyrd Sisters or Small Gods would be my personal recommendations, but there's a few good choices.

What's the general consensus on Eric? I never see anyone so much as mention it.

I treated myself today to The Last Hero (I have the original release but it is too absurdly gigantic to actually read) and the illustrated version of Eric, which I didn't know was a thing. I don't think I've seen any Josh Kirby illustrations that aren't full cover pieces, so that'll be fun to look through.

Something I forgot about Eric is that you have the proto-UU staff, like he clearly saw how much potential there was to have a bunch of bickering old men instead of the cutthroat backstabbers of previous books and immediately ran with it.

I mean it's those covers or the originals but weirdly zoomed in and blurry, unfortunately. Also some "collectors edition" hardcovers or something that are also generic but hand drawn?
