On a 94 NA is it possible to find a car equipped with a LSD without having the A package equipment?

I may soon be in the market for a used, fun daily driver. I can't keep reading all the praise about Miatas without looking into them further, so a question came up. What's the "best" kind of miata as far as speed, reliability, etc.? Are there certain years to watch out for? Certain years to avoid like the plague? I'm a tall guy, 6'5, but I've heard that that doesn't automatically eliminate the possibility of comfortably driving a miata... any truth to this? I suppose I'm pretty much asking for an introduction to the wonderful world of Miata.

Maybe if someone optioned it that way. Mine's a C Package and it has the Torsen.

It is by will alone I set my mind in motion.
6'5 is pretty tall for a miata, depending on how you're proportioned you might be able to get away with it by removing some cushion or mounting the seat directly to the floor. I doubt you'll fit that well though.

Personally, I'm aiming for a '94-'97. If you're tall you can do a "foamectomy".

If you have long legs forget about being able to fit in a miata. I had one of my legs pinned against the dashboard (with the seat all the way back) while sitting in one during a car show. I made quite a scene as I struggled to free myself.

No, it needs to be at least the A, B, or C package. Base models did not come with Torsen, nor was it an option. Also no automatics.

The NC's styling has really grown on me. It's like a more modern, more aggressive NA, which is great. Some people say it's a fat pig and is too "soft". Granted, it does weigh about 200 pounds more than the previous cars (at 2400 vs 2200 pounds). The NC is really much more modernized than the previous iterations. Even the NB in 2005 was basically the same car as the NA in 1990, with tweaks along the way. For a huge revision and update, gaining 200 pounds (but also gaining about 25hp and 15 ft.-lbs.) isn't too bad by today's standards. 2400 pounds is a pretty drat light car for the mainstream market in 2007 (unfortunately).

I really, really like the PRHT since I live in an area with actual seasons (and for security), but the price on a loaded PRHT gets way too close to an S2000 for me to ever actually go through with it, I think. I like to balance performance and creature comforts though, so the added 70 pounds or so of the PRHT isn't heart breaking for me. On the flip side, you can pick up a loaded NA or NB for a fraction of a new NC and get just as much enjoyment out of it. I wouldn't say the NC is a bad car at all, though, if you absolutely have to buy new. It's just that if you get into the loaded models pushing $30k, that's getting a little absurd.

Now, up until a few years ago you were not allowed to have the US-Style turn signal. As far as I know in the US the Miata had the turn signals always on at about 50% of full brightness, flashing with 100% brightness when used.
Now the previous owner had a shop change this turn signal behaviour to the standard EU kind, meaning the turn signals really just get power when used, like this:

Now I want to convert it back to the US style, since it has been street legal here since quite a few years. Does anyone have an idea what the shop could have done to convert the signal behaviour, and how I have to re-wire it?

 Yay, a bunch of people who never read AI bitching about AI.

The NC gets a lukewarm reception out of the enthusiast community because people who really love their Miatas tend to flog them on autocrosses and the like. The early NB is the fastest stock Miata you can choose for this purpose - it's stiffer than the NA and has the 140hp 1.8, but is hardly any heavier since the base was still well and truly a base car - no air, no power steering, no power windows / mirrors / locks / antenna. Grassroots Motorsports did a test comparing the NB to the NC to the Solstice, and the Solstice is even heavier than the NC - yet on an example autocross, the results were NB, followed very closely by the Solstice, with the NC bringing up the rear by a good margin. It gained weight, but it didn't get enough tire and suspension work to stay a quick handler.

Arguably the Miata has been headng that way since about 2001 - later NBs were loaded to the gills 'standard', probably because Mazda felt the need to compete against some higher end roadsters like the Boxster and Z3.

My Mazdaspeed MX-5 just got to go on a trip through the Black Hills of South Dakota. Obviously, I was no match for the motorcycle, but bombing down Iron Mountain road and through Spearfish Canyon was a blast.

I put in a flyin' Miata downpipe and intake earlier this year and they seem to help the car out quite a bit. However, the best modification I did for this trip was a cruise control. 1100 miles without it would have sucked.

While the NA is what made me want a Miata so many years ago, it just seems a bit outdated looking to me now. I like the NB's looks and the NC has really grown on me, especially the interior which seems more sophisticated than the earlier models.

Is there much of a difference between the three generations as far as being a daily driver? I'm looking to get a new(er) car next month and I was highly considering the NC, but there are a lot of NBs on sale in the Houston area, while used NCs are severely lacking.

Also, is there a big difference between the 6 speed/17 inch wheels/front tower brace and the 5 speed/16 inch wheels in the NC?

quote:

GT + PRHT is what would get it that high, though. I would think the models most people would buy would be in the $23-24k range.

Can I call the NC a bloated, hideous piece of poo poo that's got nothing to do with what the NA/NB are about without getting banned in here? Hey guys let's add weight and slap our disgusting parts bin fender flares on it, loving brilliant. Even the NBs were trying way too hard to look like a radical xtreme mini rx-7, but at least they perform. Buying an NC because it doesn't look "dated" is asinine. I'm going to go ahead and recommend you buy the automatic if you're going to buy an NC because it looks nice and has a pretty interior.

Sure you can, but I think you are being a bit silly. With cars getting heavier and heavier a addition of around 200 pounds is not that bad. After I lost my 2000 SE to a wreck I decided to get a NC because of the side air bags. My NC feels a lot faster than my NB and I really like how the top works. The suspension is a bit softer but I only have the touring edition so it does have the sports suspension pack on it. I think the NC is a great car and is respectful to the Miata line.

They are +40 Nickels. The finish changes depending on the light; I can make them look near-chrome or practically gunmetal. The finish is a high-gloss silver that's hand-sprayed with a VERY fine layer of gloss black to produce the smoky look. I was on the fence when I ordered them between silver (not blingy enough) and black (too blingy), and when I saw that finish I fell in love. :swoon:

NC's are cool. They look like poo poo, but they're cool. I had some guy who was like 6'6 and 250lbs squeeze into my car with a helmet on when I had my hardtop. I took a ride with him in his NC and there's a lot more grunt and a lot more refined and purdy. It reminded me more of the MR-S' interior. I got a 74:xx run when he was in my car, when I rode with him he spun out and still managed a 65:xx. I was holding onto the "oh poo poo" bar like my life depended on it.
