My copy of Blood, Sweat, and Eyeballs arrived early and it fuckin rips. I need some more time with it but its undeniably their riffiest album so far. If you liked the direction of Radio Violence and Minds Like Minefields off the EP this is an extension of that sound.

I always felt like their albums felt like there were two clear halves with the back end feeling tonally different from the front but this one is even throughout and paced so well that it just flies by.

I have also always appreciated that what they’re singing about has grown up with them. Its why I can’t take Blink or Less Than Jake seriously anymore - you’re approaching 50 stop singing about crushes and getting out of your hometown. There’s always gonna be some breakup tracks but Matt’s not solely singing drinking songs about women anymore - he’s observing the slow death of humanity to capitalist exploitation and the crippling isolation it causes. And Dan is still low key the band’s best songwriter. Broken Down in a Time Machine is maybe an all time great Trio track?

It’s not Infirmary or Good Mourning but its as good if not better than Cursed or Crimson and hanging just below Maybe I’ll Catch Fire and Goddammit. I’m so fuckin jazzed to see them with Drug Church.

This new Sunny Day Real Estate song sounds great, wow. Really makes me wish they'd release a new album instead of re-recording an old one. Any idea why they aren't doing that? This and Lipton Witch that they released 10 years ago on that split with Circa Survive are the only new tunes they've released in the last 24 years :(

I have the same issue with both the new Blink album and the new Green Day album, and it's that they both sound over-produced, polished, and compressed to the point of feeling like nothing. It's all so flat that it feels lifeless and the vocals are hard to understand. I know this has been an ongoing thing for decades with music ("loudness wars") but I've noticed it increasing rather than decreasing with punk bands for whatever reason.

I've only listened to a little bit of the new Alkaline Trio album but it doesn't seem to have this problem at least. edit: it does. All three of these albums also sound like the bands are on autopilot. Not terrible, but completely forgettable. Alkaline Trio though has came off like this to me for everything past Crimson though.

I got around to listening to it today and yeah it’s good. Solid all the way through with a couple good duet songs. Also good to hear Dan’s songs sounding like Trio songs instead of his solo stuff which brought Cursed down a little bit imo.

I know this is the WATT tour, but did they play Cross Out The Eyes in the encore? The bit at 3:00 with "'till we DIE" makes a room absolutely fuckin' explode and it never gets old.

The latest single starts with these lyrics:
"Some people are just going to hate you,
No matter what you do.
So don't waste your time trying to change their minds –
Just be a better you."

I thought England Take My Bones was fun, and Mongol Horde Mingle Harde? was at least interesting. Every other thing he's put out solo just feels like the same loving record over and over and it got boring in like, 2015 and I stopped paying attention.

I thought the Blink and Fall Out Boy albums were both pretty disappointing in that regard, especially for albums that were sort of billed as a "return to form" in some ways. Neither felt like much of a course correction from their recent releases. Green Day was a lot better IMO. Still think Sum 41 is going to be far and away the best out of those big four in this cycle of albums, I've really enjoyed all of their 2010s releases (13 Voices in particular) and the songs they've released so far have made me pretty optimistic.

I gave the new Green Day album a few more listens and it grew on me a little. It still feels like "going through the motions" Green Day, but it's not terrible. I also don't think that Green Day ever really strayed from form much, aside from putting out a few albums that were purely "rock". I'd have to agree that the new Blink album is not a return to form. The last release that felt like actual Blink 182 was the Dogs Eating Dogs EP, which was really good.

The new Alkaline Trio album though, haven't been able to get more than 3 tracks in. It's such a shame how they got big because of their raw and earnest sound, only to spend the last decade and change putting out completely over-processed, boring tracks of nothing.

Oh, the recent Bouncing Souls album was another one in the same vein. Over-processed, going through the motions, ultra compressed and dull. On one hand, I'm happy that many of the bands from my youth are still going at it and putting stuff out there. On the other hand, most of these recent albums have just been a little depressing to listen to.
