So I want to talk about an Australian band that is pretty close to me heart. They are kind of post hardcore, but not quite and they really don't slip into any genre that I can really define. They get played on the local Australian punk rock show a decent amount, so I figure it's fair to drop them into this thread.

So who are they? They are a Perth band called Eleventh He Reaches London. They have been pumping out songs and albums for a few years and the best way to describe their catalog to date is being very Australian. The music they write is heavily steeped in colonial Australian culture, and the effects that it has had on the people in the country. Themes covered include: colonialism, whether a god exists (and if it does do we need it), alcoholism, anti-monarchism, and suicide.

I'm not really sure if their music will mean much to people that haven't lived in Australia and can see how the land and society has sculpted their music... But I really love these guys and hope they keep pumping out tunes for a while to come.

Music time:

The Good Fight For Harmony

This was the first album they released in 2005. Compared to their newer works it's quite raw and doesn't touch on a whole lot of stuff that their newer songs do.
Say You See Why So
Long Grows the List of the Live and Dead Pretenders

Hollow Be My Name

Second album, and the title is already giving away a bit about what you will find. It's a pretty dark and introspective journey about blaming the world for your troubles and not taking responsibility for the things that you have done. There are some really amazing tracks on this album. My favorite is a song called Toorali which steals it's base tune from the old song about Botany Bay and the first fleet... but it's a tad more morose.
Toorali
For the Commonwealth and the Queen

Bānhūs

Soon to be released, and from the sound of the first two preview tracks, a bit of a departure from their last two albums. This album looks like it will be quite raw in parts, but also quite conservative and introspective in others. I'm looking forward to the journey :)

After not liking the new La Dispute song I'm happy that The Menzingers have come along and cleaned my ears out!

It's very good, but took a listen or two to sink in.

Saw The Smith Street Band, The Menzingers, and The Holy Mess a few days ago on their EU tour. Was really nice gig. Smith Street were amazing, The Menzingers were better than the last time I saw them, and Holy Mess were much better then their live videos on youtube make them look. Good concert :)

Me too, where did you catch them? Great show, first time I got to see The Menzingers.

Copenhagen. Nice venue, just packed in enough, just enough crowd surfing :)

Saw refused last night in Copenhagen. They performed well. Played some new stuff, I'm not sold on it yet, I need to hear it in the context of the album.

Fear Like Us is streaming their new album. It's very Australian, and I'm a big fan of their stuff.

Not the exact same vein, but they all toured together which has to count for something, right?

Haven't really listened to them before but I get strong vibes of 90's Australian punk from them based on this song. That's not a bad thing.

Gospel released their comeback album today. If that doesn’t mean anything to you, listen to The Moon Is a Dead World immediately.

A couple of tracks into this one and if it keeps up this quality it will be an AOTY contender. The first song sounds like David Yow fronting Emerson, Lake and Palmer.

The new one reminds me a lot of Horse the band.

Blood command in Copenhagen were pretty great. Nikki is going to go far if she can get in front of the right crowd, her energy is going to make the band a lot of fans.

Much like the new Blink album I don’t care how many of my fellow olds tell me new Green Day is good, actually.

On the other hand I’m over here eagerly awaiting new Alkaline Trio so maybe I’m just wrong in my own way.

I’ll always look forward to a new alkaline trio album even if they will never recapture what they originally had.
