Wolves in the Throne Room is a terrible band though. But I guess every genre has room for good and bad bands.

I'm pretty sure I could go buy a copy of Mein Kampf very easily should I so desire, since Europe isn't one monolithic entity. The really aggressive hate speech legislation especially in regards to Nazi stuff is in Germany and Austria.

A human heart posted:Anyone know any bands with a similar sound to Nokturnal Mortum's Goat Horns or Nazgul's De Expugnatione Elfmuth? Sort of a symphonic sound, but with raw production. I did look into Nokturnal Mortum's later albums, but they're not as good as Goat Horns. I thought NeChrist was the best Nokturnal Mortum album, although it is in their "max nazi" period if you dont like that sort of thing.

Countess self-classifies as orthodox black metal, which is really just shorthand for Orlok to say "look, I really like 80s metal and also black metal and I like to mix them up". And since he has been going at it since the early 90s I pretend that he started that whole thing.

She seems kinda dumb for taking metal lyrics seriously and pretending that music can seriously influence people.

Nokturnal Mortum always had those NS leanings, they just got better at hiding them on later albums.

My favourite thing about Nokturnal Mortum will forever be their evolving logo. Goes from regular upsidedown crosses satanic band to having swastikas, then ditching the swastikas for runes to hide the nazi tendencies and finally pretending to just be really into viking stuff. At least have the decency to stand by beliefs.

try it with a lime posted:A couple tracks from "The Holocaust Messiah" by Megiddo (the best band that isn't Ruins or Countess) are up on bandcamp. The production sounds a bit tighter and I like the new drum samples he apparently spent the last 13 years looking for but other than that, yeah it is Megiddo. Same as it ever was. Not that it is a bad thing. Far from it.

The vocals certainly weren't what I expected but they do fit the music, which is really the important thing. They aren't overpowering in the mix but still fairly clear, which was presumably the aim with hardcore-style shouty vocals? I normally prefer the guitars to be a bit more fuzzy (see the Megiddo track up-thread) but that is just personal preference.

Another band for people wanting that ugly raw black metal is Havohej. And I guess Profanatica as well, since Havohej is really just Paul Ledneys one-man project.

Skilleddk posted:So I just found Batushka from the Behemoths Poland tour announcement. I absolutely love it, except the gregorian chants. I love the vocal style, is there any BM band that's similar to it? The only I can think of is Children of Bodom but that's not even BM. Isn't that just kinda generic black metal screeching?

I guess the main thing is that they're higher in the mix compared to most black metal, and the cleaner production lets you hear them more but the vocals as such doesn't strike me as anything special. I suppose you could listen to this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lACeX53ER_Q and see if you like those vocals. It is sort of the same, just rougher and a bit more interesting.

LLN is mostly garbage, really. The Vlad Tepes/Belketre split is probably the best thing to come out of that "scene". It is actually good rather than just being a low-fi mess recorded in a bathroom somewhere in France.

It is kinda funny how LLN used to be this mysterious thing and you had to like trade tapes or lovely CD-Rs to get a chance to hear some of it. If you were lucky you actually got a real LLN album, but sometimes it was just some other poo poo labelled as one of the LLN bands. Now everything is on youtube and you easily hear for yourself just how little of it was actually any good. But they were really good at building up a reputation, I'll give them that.

I've been listening to this album quite a bit lately: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rmIFiK_8Rjo It's not really anything special or groundbreaking. Just really well done mid-paced black metal.
