It can't hurt to take it to an Apple Store and see if they'll repair it. There's stories on here of Apple repairing stuff for free that they really shouldn't have.

One would have hoped for a spec bump in the iPod touches to match, but I guess iPods are a declining market.

Apple will have one more event this fall to show off (best guesses) Yosemite, new iPad, and new iPod line-up. iPods are a declining market but the iPod Touch still sells because it's the iPhone for kids.
