Person handy with a wrench could turn a profit or get a deal, assuming the damage is as limited as claimed.
That price is about right considering age and mileage, minus a few hundred for a clutch job.

Now the fact that it was used to haul wet dogs around is another matter.

He has that much money in parts alone, not counting installation, fabrication, tuning and dyno time. Building stupidly fast cars is not something you do on a limited budget. The market for this thing is limited, but believe me that it will sell for close to that amount.

Seeing someone with my bike, all dressed up for what looks to be a road trip, makes me very, very happy. Maybe I just really like seeing someone using something other than a big touring bike for ... touring. Remember kids, bungee cords are a perfectly acceptable substitute for hard bags, providing everything is jammed into a waterproof duffel bag.
I imagine it would drive rather well in traffic, because it's a large engine with no boost before 3k rpm.

And aren't GS500's like $5,000 brand new?

A buddy of mine used to buy up those unfinished projects by a truckload, part them out and double his money. I've learned a whole lot about reading between the lines when answering those adds. Doesn't run because of some cheap part that owner conveniently didn't bother to install? That means it needs a new engine.

The scary thing is how cheap people are willing to sell their poo poo. My buddy would have gotten that car for less than a grand.
