I came here to post an ad I saw yesterday for an '86 CRX that was listed at "$4,200 firm" because "that's how much I owe the finance company" but the ad has expired. :(

So, here's another gem: http://portland.craigslist.org/mlt/car/555782449.html

It's a 2005 Prius with 29k miles for the low, low price of $24,995!

Edit: I guess that price isn't as insane as I initially had thought. I still find it absurd, since that's the MSRP of a heavily-optioned brand-new one.

Yes. Many people seem to think that displacement is the only important thing in determining what's a 'beginner' vehicle. By that line of reasoning, a CBR600RR is just as good a starter bike as (if not better than) an SV650. Much like how an S2000 is a 'beginner' car like a Chevy Cavalier.

This car has been cracking me up on craigslist for the last few weeks: 1997 Acura Integra Show Car Over $50,000 Invested - $27995

This is funny to me because amongst the $50,000 invested, they opted for those cheap and lovely APC tail lights. But the really interesting find happened when I went to the dealer's website (yes, this monstrosity is being sold by a dealer): Northwest Investment Cars, Inc

It was there that I found this, which I've never even heard of: 1988 Classic Tiffany Coupe. 30,900 miles. $34,995

Wtf is a "Classic Tiffany Coupe"? As it turns out, it's some freaky kit car built on a Mercury Cougar for people with no taste or knowledge of cars. The most info I could find about these is here: http://members.cox.net/tiffanyclassic/index.html

Also worth mentioning: Doing a search on craigslist for the term 'invested' can net some great results.

I agree. I've owned several cars with mid-to-high 200k miles (295,000 was the highest), mostly Hondas (one Mazda), and never paid more than $700 for one. $1,650 just seems like too much.

I was looking for cars up here in Vancouver, I was actually on the phone with DJCommie/Baby Hitler at the time, I noticed a 99ish civic, non matching wheels, lovely altezza lights that were all fogged up inside, there was water inside the car, all the little interior bits, radio surround, door handle surround that kind of stuff was painted this lovely light blue and it was chipping off, they wanted something like 11 or 12k for it.

We get quite a bit of Civic price inflation here in Portland, along with any other car that is popular with the rice crowd. However, a month ago I bought a 2000 Integra GSR that is 100% stock for $8k from a dealer. $8k is below retail book value by a few hundred dollars to $1k, depending on which book you check. It can be done, it just takes a long time. I was looking for a while.

$6,000 over retail book value for a riced Civic from a private party is insane. I figure this kid took high retail value, added the total that he spent on the parts, and made that his price, not realizing that bolt-on mods don't make your car more valuable.

Edit: The second most expensive 2001 Civic on Portland CL is $11,000, and there were some nice ones in the $7-8,000 range. Maybe you should come here to buy your car?

In some states, if a car is considered abandoned (criteria vary by state), you can get a title for it by doing paperwork, paying fees, probably getting a police inspection where they make sure it's not stolen, and otherwise jumping through a bunch of bureaucratic hoops. It's probably not worth the effort in this case considering that a nice running 1st-gen integra should only cost ~$500 if it's a bit of a beater (and I'm sure a car that has sat for 7 years would not be pretty).

Personal note: I owned two '89 integras several years ago, each of which cost less than $600, ran great, and sold for what I paid a year later. One even survived a rallycross. They're good, solid cars, but they're not worth putting money or effort into.
