zombies + sharks = fun

I demand a gallery of knitting! I'll start:

This is a cape that I made for my mother-in-law. The yarn is recycled silk. It's pricer stuff than I usually get, and a bitch to work with. But I love the colors. The pattern is based on Bloom from Knitty, but was adapted to make the cape longer.

Custom cell phone case knit on the round at a very tight gague. The yarn is a cashmere blend picked up from a craft store. It's very similar to Debbie Bliss Cashmerino Aran, but was about half the price.

This image is actually a scan of a felted clutch. The pattern is from One Skein, which is a nice little book that's been very handy for gift knitting. The yarn is Brown Sheep Lamb's Pride, which I believe is the yarn used in the book.

Garter stitch scarf made with Cascade 220 mixed with two strands of a contrasting mohair yarn. This one was a lot of fun to make.

You may recognize this pattern as the robot on the cover of Craft Issue 1. Unfortunately, the pattern is not in the magazine. Since I'd been looking for it for at least 6 months when the mag came out, I was not exactly happy that they'd feature a project on the cover with no instructions, and emailed them to express this. I got a very nice email back from one of the editors explaining that they had intended to feature the pattern, but the designer had withdrawn her permission. Thankfully, a kind person on a knitting forum had a copy of the original pattern booklet (that also included other adorable toy patterns) and let me borrow it by mail. The yarn is Knitpicks Wool of the Andes.

The yarn for this ribbed scarf came from unravelling a cotton sweater vest purchased from a thrift store.

This handbag was made of various yarns from my stash. I know there's some Cascade 220 in it, as well as a little of the Cashmere yarn from the cell phone case above. I also used a thin, flat cotton chenille yarn from ebay, but I can't remember what the others were. This pattern is also from One Skein.

As you see, I'm mostly an accessories knitter. Thanks to the wonders of carpal tunnel I can't knit as much as I'd like, so focusing on smaller projects means I actually finish them.

I'd love to see pictures of everyone else's cool handknits. Please include details about the yarn and/or pattern if you remember it, because I'm always looking for excuses to expand my stash.

Holy crap, that is some awesome poo poo. I particularly love the CRAFT magazine robot, and that cape is absolutely beautiful. (Why is the pretty yarn ALWAYS the hardest to work with? I hate that.)

I'm a crochet girl myself, but I love the look of knitted stuff. I've tried knitting before and it was too slow for me (I prefer instant gratification because I have zero patience) and I also sucked at it, but I've been meaning to give it the old college try one more time.

Can't wait to see everyone else's knitted stuff!

EEEK!! I'll have to take pics of my stuff when done!
I asked santa for a knitting starter kit, and he came through for me!
I'm currently in the middle of 2 scarves, first projects ever! I started one about a week ago, then found the coolest fat yarn so I got some fat bamboo needles and started knitting. Can we ask questions here too? I'd love some newbie advice please

Here's some of the stuff I knit last year.

1. Cascading Leaves Shawl

A local friend of mine made up the pattern and I knit this for my mother in law for Christmas using Koigu. I love knitting with the stuff.

2. Pomatomus

This is a pattern from Knitty I love, knit with ArtYarns Ultramerino. I love the colors, I love how the socks feel, and I'd knit this pattern again.

3. Mystery Stole 2/Scheherazade

My first foray into lace knitting, I love how this turned out, but it's way, way too big for me and I'm not really a stole person anyway. Still, I love knitting lace! I used Knit Picks Shadow for this project.

4. My So-Called Scarf

I wanted to use up some Noro Kureyon I had lying around my house, so I knit this simple little scarf. I don't think I'll use this yarn again for anything unless it's for a felted project, because I don't really like the feel of it much.

I'm glad to see this thread here!

Oh, I've waited for this day (as you can tell by my name) but that doesn't mean I've prepared. So I only have one knit out of 5+ years of knitting on my PC. :shobon:

Everyone, meet Socket!

Isn't he cute? Socket loves giving people flowers and cutting the heads off of mean people. I made up the pattern as I went along, and the eyes were Needle-Felted.

Once I find my camera I'll get some pictures of my other monsters.

Starshaped: Noro yarns get so much softer after washing. Don't give up on them yet!

Anybody on Ravelry yet? We could start up a group.

And here are a few knits, many more on Ravelry:

Calorimetry headband, from Knitty. I used Classic Elite Beatrice, and it has become my new favorite yarn. Buttery soft merino, and it's nice and tight spun so it hasn't pilled yet.

Also I do love the Garterlac dishcloth pattern:

There's some knitting talk in the sewing/clothing design thread already (including links to some helpful resources), so you may want to check there and see if any of your questions have come up. I don't mind general discussion, but don't necessarily want to co-opt it from the existing thread.

Those pictures are really impressive! Kureyon is too drat scratchy, and washing it only helped a little for me. But if you love the look then try Silk Garden. It's got a similar look and those great Noro color schemes, but feels much better.

edit:
I have a Ravelry account but have barely used it. Someone start a goon group, maybe then I'll actually keep up with my account there.

edit the second:
I'm a moron and forgot the thread tag. If some kindly mod could change it to "porn," I'd love them forever.

The only scarf I have ever completed was on huge needles with nothing to do for 3 days.

Try something smaller if you like-- you don't have to complete that scarf if you find something fun you like!

I still have to look at my needles unless it's stockinette stitch in the round.

Thanks! I really do need to try Silk Garden sometime because I've heard a lot of good things about it. I love your cell phone cozy; I need to make one for my ipod sometime but that requires finding yarn I want to use, and I'm trying to use up what I have now before I buy any more.

effika, I love the garterlac dishcloth, but I've never been able to do one myself. Entrelac still confuses me; I need to just sit down and try it again until I get it right. Maybe that will be the next thing I work on.

Cathis, I've been knitting for about 5 years, but I didn't start doing anything more than basic hats and scarves until about 3 years ago. I also didn't knit a lot my first year, so I'd say you can pick up on things if you just keep at it consistently.

Anyone else a backwards lefty knitter like me? It's a pain sometimes because I can't really show my friends how to knit if they ever want to learn. It made learning interesting...

That's great! Calorimetry bugged me because it was a really really easy pattern but there were some errors in it in my opinion- if you knit it as written it's a HUGE son of a gun.

I don't have photos of many recent things, but I'll bite:

Wavy, from Knitty, in the new Lamb's Pride variegated.

Fuzzy Feet, also from Knitty.

Little Christmas ornament doodads.

Starshaped, would you say Pomatomous is suitable for a moderately experienced knitter who's not used to small-gauge stuff? I think my next project is going to be the gauntlets using that stitch pattern I've seen floating around, but I've never used needles smaller than 4s before; Magic Loop on size 2s and that lace pattern is a little intimidating, but they're so pretty.

And for everyone who's still on the fence, I have to once again reiterate that Ravelry is awesome, simply for reference if you aren't inclined to document your knitting. Think DeviantArt for knitters, only with helpful advice and lots of interesting ideas instead of temper tantrums and furry porn. You need to sign up at the website, but I think most people are only waiting a week or so for their invites.

Black Huntress, the pattern isn't as difficult as it looks; I remember my eyes crossing when I first started, but it's easy to pick up after a few rounds. I absolutely love knitting on smaller needles, and 2s aren't that much smaller than 4s so I don't think you'd have a problem. Anyway, even if you have to rip things out a few times when you start, it's all just practice anyway!

I love the wavy scarf and the color of the yarn you used.

I just joined the Ravelry group (I'm freyathegrey on there). I don't have much for pictures of my objects yet, including older stuff. I'm pretty bad about taking pictures of anything I finish. Right now I'm working on a dress for my baby, and that should be done soon. It's from a vintage knitting pattern.

However, if you can get your hands on a copy of Son of Stitch 'n Bitch, the Deady Bear is mine. The Deady Bear featured in the book is the same one I made.

I started knitting unsuccessfully in 2004, and I didn't really get on it till 2005. I've actually only made one scarf, and a few hats here and there, and from there I've made lots of things, but haven't yet moved onto socks.

I knit mostly for other people so most of my stuff is out there (hopefully) being enjoyed by its recipients, but I've gathered up what I could find. Apologies for the horrible quality: I have no real camera so these are all taken with my laptop/cell phone.

Rainbow armwarmer made with acrylic. The little grey square is a mini pocket and I duplicate stitched a Space Invader on it.

A not too remarkable fingerless glove. The only noteworthy things are the color (Lorna Laces Shepherd Socks have the most beautiful colorways!) and the fact that this is the first pattern I ever made up. Unfortunately they're not nearly warm enough for the winter.

My Star Scarf! This was my first time double knitting and I was happy to learn that it is stupidly easy. I get a lot of compliments on this one. Made with Cascade 220.

The ubiquitous Kittyville hat from Stitch n Bitch, wore by my lovely hat model. One of my first pieces, I think. The ears are a little wonky so it looks more like a cow hat or something.

And my current WIP...

This is my first real intaria project (I did another hat, but it was simple geometric shapes, not a full image). The pink is Silk Garden and a bit darker than I'd hoped, the black and white are from my stash. Right now I'm trying to work out the decreases because it would have been far too tall the way the pattern is written.

KNITHULHU! I've made a bunch of these for friends and on commission. People just seem to love the little guys.

I seriously suck at taking pictures of my knits. So here's two.

Here is my Calorimetry. I don't mind it being super huge. I have a lot of hair, so it fits okay, actually. It's knit out of SWTC's Karaoke, in a limited color way unique to my LYS. SWTC is located a few miles down the road from the LYS. I haven't seen any of the special color ways in a while, though. :( I wanted to make a matching scarf, and maybe wrist warmers. Ah well.

Here's a crappy shot of my Unbiased. I lined it with a quilter's batik, and also made the bag more rectangular, and the strap super long. It stretched out a lot more than I anticipated, so I'm going to line the strap, too.

I'm working on Cozy, from Knitty in Cascade's Venezia. It's going to end up being really heavy, but really warm too. I'm probably going to start up a pair of socks for my upcoming trip to Las Vegas, because socks are probably easier to knit in a car than a shawl-type object. I'm thinking of Knitty's Broadripple.

Yay knitters! I'm on ravelry as Kalista, but I'm more a lurker rather than a 'take pictures of every drat yarn and project you have' participator.

My knitting pictures are in a thousand different folders on my PC, and I'm not good at documenting everything I knit anyway, but here's a few things.

Griffindor scarf out of Cascade 220 that I knit for a coworker to give to her niece for Christmas this year. The pattern is from "Charmed Knits" and was my mindless knitting for awhile, because it's just one looooonnngggg tube in the round.

Diamond Hat:
Pattern is from the Garter Belt. It was a lot easier than I expected it to be. The yarn was from Knitpicks.

DNA Scarf:
My brother graduated from pharmacy school last year, so I knit him the DNA scarf from some handspun alpaca.

I knit Clementine for my mom for Mother's Day this year, the yarn is a silk noir from Great Adirondack Yarn Co.

Here are the Sockapalooza socks I knit for my Swedish pal this summer, modeled by her. They were knit from my handspun too, and were a lot of fun to make. I keep meaning to start a pair for myself.

Sadly, I think I end up giving away most of the stuff I knit before I can take a picture of it. That, and these days I spend more time at my spinning wheel than I do knitting.

All I've ever finished are a bunch of stupid hats:

(And 3 others I don't have pictures of.)

They're "stupid" because I didn't really follow a pattern, just got some circulars and started going around. The ended up more triangular than round, though, which was kind of good when I had long hair but just looks silly now.

I started about 10 years ago working on some afghan patterns in a book my grandmother had which still aren't anywhere near done. One of them is about halfway done, which I've been working on during football games and probably will finish this year sometime.

I've also done some "tube socks" which were basically rectangles that I sewed up the side. They worked out pretty well (except for a few places where I had to join up yarn and the knots ended up being hard on the feet) especially since dpns are giving me a hell of a time (I've got about 40% through a sock 4-5 times and lost track/dropped stitches/ended up completely off every time).

Right now I'm working on a massive detangle project (one of my siblings decided it'd be fun to unravel half of my yarn and then toss it all back in the basket, there's about 20 balls/skeins intertangled), some more stupid hats, and the aforementioned afghans.

It's the Smariek Knits Pythagorean Scarf.

And here's an iPod cozy I made, I get lots of requests to make this for friends. I did a cable on the back, and it even has a little pocket for the headphones.

Here's the cabled hat for my husband which was a really fun knit.

Right now, I'm working on a basic ribbed Patriots hat for my dad (red and navy blue Paton's wool with a Patriots patch on it), a pair of knitty Monkey socks for my mom, fetchings for myself, and a cabled scarf for my husband, to match the cabled hat I made. The scarf and hat will be lined with white fleece when I get around to it.

Could we make this the yarncraft in general thread? I'm learning to crochet, and I just tried my hand at drop spinning yesterday and would love to show off the results. :)

I did scrounge up a few images that I suppose I should put on Ravelry, too.

This is a hedgehog made from the Huggable Hedgehogs pattern a couple of years ago for a friend's baby.

I made the pumpkin from Knitty, but I made a much better looking one afterwards.

This rabbit was inspired by the Patrica Waller crocheted art pieces, which are far larger than stuffed toy size. A friend of a friend really wanted one, and I whipped this up...

..which in turn inspired Deady Bear, which was exclusively made for Son of Stitch 'n Bitch. I couldn't use the bunny because that was already too close to a previous piece, so Deady Bear was created. This is my personal photo; the professional ones look much better, of course.

The pattern was from here http://www.hjsstudio.com/kneesock.html but it's really not a "pattern", more a formula that you plug your own leg measurements into to make a sock that fits you just right. The top is just a few inches of k1p1 rib, and the heels and toes are both short row heels/toes. I  short row socks, I think it makes a cleaner line than a heelflap and gusset construction. I usually substitute short row heels in any sock pattern.

There are lots of methods for short rows, but this is a good picture tutorial: http://www.cosmicpluto.com/blog/?p=585, and so is this one. http://misocrafty.squarespace.com/journal/2006/9/21/short-row-heel-tutorial.html

One cool thing about short row heels and toes: they are exactly the same. A heel is a toe is a heel is a toe. Just learn one technique for both!
