With the southern states starting to warm up and the northern states being in prime snow wheeling time I figure it is time for a 4x4 thread. With the end of a rainy week and getting over a cold I decided to take the Cherokee out for some fun. A friend of a friend lives on 100+ acres of pasture land and invited us over for a little mud fun. The Cherokee at the beginning of the day. A short video of the mud puddle. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lrz6CttFn1w My friends 1984 land cruiser after getting stuck in slick mud. He really needs new tires. These got packed full of mud and wouldn't clean out. The Cherokee after round one and pulling my friend back to the house after he got stuck again. And again after round two. My friends dad joined in this round with a Ram 3500 on 35x14.5 super swampers. Most of the mud is what he slung on me. The ram getting dirty. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VMXr5kdZr6E This dog followed us around all day. He was always leaning to one side. Oh poo poo so is the Jeep. Well that explains it. I snapped the bracket holding one end of the swaybar. It looks like I will need to weld that up this week. I know I'm not the only one here with a 4x4. Lets see those pictures and if you don't have any go out and get some. Atticus_1354 fucked around with this message at 00:39 on Feb 1, 2008 |

If not I may just get a KlR650 and ride that. And speaking of helping motorcyclists. I had a friend call me and ask me to bring a tow strap out to him. Well when I show up he isn't stuck and their is a guy in motorcycle gear sitting in my friends truck. He tried to cross a river, fell over and the bike washed a ways down stream. So we had to attach the strap to the truck and then I floated down stream and hooked it on the bike. We finally got it out and my friend drove him home.

Glad to see some cars showing up in the thread. It doesn't matter what you drive. All that matters is that you have fun. Sadly I had to cancel my last off road trip because an acquaintance of mine died car surfing so my friends parents freaked out about cars and wouldn't let the younger guys that had asked me to take them come along. So we had to cancel the trip.

Alright everyone I expect to see some people going out and getting stuck. If you don't get stuck, high centered or break something your not wheeling hard enough for this thread. Or you could just stupidly drive in to some bottomless clay like I did. The puddle at the bottom center is from my differential. You can see were it dug in when I winched out. Smooth all the way around. Without the mud I have about 85% tread on these tires.

Toucan Sam posted:We buried the Ford a couple weeks ago, first time stuck in four years. It was similar to yours since he drove into a pretty bottomless hole that looked semi solid. I ended up pulling it out with my dually because the axles bottomed out and the mud was over the top of the 38s. Yeah it was kind of funny because I was driving along in a neighborhood they are building at the end of my street and saw one of the lots was cleared out pretty far back. I decided to see if I could make it back in to the woods, but stopped because of visible water on the ground. I turned left to circle back out and the ground seemed to disappear. And before anyone jumps on me about trespassing the developer told me as long as I didn't mess up any lots being worked on I could play down there. Does anyone know what I need to do to replace my rear dana 35 with a 44? I have a rubicon express lift and a 4.56 geared locker in the 35 and I am afraid it will be broken if I do anything to much. I will need to regear the rear to match, but will it just bolt up to the same drive shaft and the suspension? I don't have any money to swap right now, but I would like to know what is required in case the 35 grenades or I happen in to a bunch of money. Just a friendly warning to all of you without skid plates. Go and buy one right now. I crawled under the jeep to check it out and found a huge gash in the plate right below my transfer case and a huge dent in the other corner. This saturday I will be taking it off and bedlining it to prevent rust. My underbody will also be getting some paint to ward off rust.

If I'm riding around offroad I keep it in 4hi with full time lockers and only switch to 4lo if I will be flexing much. Having said that I have gone through some ditches in 4hi that I should have crawled in 4lo because I didn't want to switch to lo.

If it's slippery the center diff is locked. I too lack finesse. The problem is that most my driving is field, field, muddy field, gully, more fields. I just slide down one side and skinny pedal up the other. Hopefully this summer I can get the money together to buy a dana 44 and locker for it. The problem is I don't want to install it without a locker and I can't afford an axle and locker. Hopefully I will be able to sell the 35 to someone.

In that case I too would have put it in 4lo. Of course I have a pretty big problem with heights so I would probably have someone else drive it. However for my driving constantly changing from 4hi to 4lo is really annoying.

There is an area with some sand near my house. I also plan to take a trip to mustang island for some beach driving and camping. I must say that this gets old after a while. I am thinking about switching to a skinnier all-terrain tire for better road handling, but I just love how good my tires grab. It is a really hard decision, but I have several more miles before these wear out. Also crossposting this from the jeep thread for you non-jeep guys. A friend was spending the weekend with me so we went for a little exploration in the Sam Houston National Forest. I found an awesome little 1 mile trail that you definitely need a small 4wheel drive with a good lift to get through. In one section I had a less than 2" of clearance on either side of the Cherokee. The trail leads to a nice little camping spot by Lake Conroe that I am going to take some friends to next week. If anyone in the Houston area is looking for a good camping spot with no activity feel free to PM me for GPS coordinates. If anyone wants to meet me there or knows of any other trails I would be more than happy to hang out. Two pictures from my cell phone.

You should probably find a friend with a wrangler and drive it some on and offroad. Some people love them and some don't. Just like any other car try and drive as many as you can. You may decide you want a Cherokee or a truck of some kind instead. Don't buy a wrangler because everyone else has one. As for buying pre-built or not, that is up to you. Do you plan to do the work yourself or hire it out? What do you want done and how close is the vehicle your looking at to what you want? Do you know what to look for and what mods are good and bad? Just because it is jacked up and has big tires doesn't mean it is good. I went with a friend to look at a cj7 the other day and it was completely lifted with longer shackles. It drove poorly because of this and would have been even worse offroad. On the other hand I bought my cherokee mostly built. The previous owner had the work done at a reputable shop and used quality components. It was also a smoking deal that I just couldn't pass up.

SO, I just got my cherokee back after it was fitted with a new transmission. So I did the normal thing and drove it in to some slick mud. Then when I went to put it in 4x4 I found that the lever was no longer connected to the transfer case. Thankfully I have a rear locker, so a liberal use of the gas pedal got me out of there, but it was a close call. I guess I will be without the jeep for another couple days.
